Hey all, after reading these ipad rumors I just had a scary thought. What if they load the new ipad with a processor and graphics card on par with the new macbook air? It's certainly possible considering the size of both. I would personally be a little annoyed that the ipad would have specs on par with the air, but then again I have no reason to be since they're two different devices. What do you guys think?

OMG, that was scary.

Ahhhh!!!! Won't someone please think of the children?! :D

I can't see this happening, they are quite different devices. I can see there is some overlap, but not to the extent that the specs will blend together.

I think an iPad with MBA internals would be more expensive than a MBA, due to the touchscreen.

The iPad is hard to do real work on, because you don't have a keyboard, and touchpscreens are only good for entertainment, not precision work.

Also, a really fast iPad would fragment the IOS market more - people would build apps that would run too slowly on the iPhone.

It would open up a few doors, but really, the iPad is good enough for reading the news, and throwing virtual birds at castles. I want a cheap iPad, not an iPad that can run Photoshop.

Well, the 2 devices have almost the same size, BUT, the air has cooling fans, whilst the iPad doesn't. That means the air's specs inside the iPad without fans will overheat it. But we will soon see dual-core cpus in the iPad, don't worry. Not an nvidia 320m though ;)

it's so scary!! terrifying even! in fact, what if they made the ipad more powerful than the macbook pro!! they could give it a 17" screen too. maybe it's even more powerful than the mac pro. Xeon processors in the ipad!! ZOMG!!!111

I would call it iPad Air and take away the display backlighting.

I bought an iPad to do "fake" work on...

Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse?
Also I love this idea of "real" work. Is that vs. "fake" work? :D
That aside, I think an iPad with MBA internals would be too large a jump for newest refresh. Plus where the MBA is running OSX and an iPad is running iOS it seems that it would be overkill to boost internals so dramatically.

Maybe you just have sausage fingers?! I get plenty of work done on my iPad.

how do you use a mouse on the ipad? it has no cursor :S unless there is an app that creates a cursor for the ipad.
They can actually make an air/ipad hybrid, like the Dell Inspiron Duo, but thin as the air ;)
BTstack mouse. Works brilliantly. Does it have a point? errr..... probably not! :D

I don't see this happening

Two different target audiences
Two different operating systems
Two different functions

+1 - agreed. These are very different devices in my eyes - I'm continually surprised how people on this board frequently equate the two.

Don't think it will happen.
Don't think it would be scary if it did.

Can I come out from under the covers now?

Is it safe?

HEHE... I love your response. When I was a kid, I used to sit on the swingset at lunch\recess with a friend, and say "wouldn't it be horrible of mexico bought the USA?" ... wouldn't it be amazing if the US launched a spaceship and we could all go on it? lol... this post is so nostalgic of those playground conversations.

how ironic that your playground conversation has actually come true. although it isn't mexico, but rather it is china. the usa is indeed "owned" by china right now. today. it has already happened. who do you think bought up all that us gov't debt, so that we could fund all those multi-billion dollar bail-outs, obamacare, and the record federal budget deficit we now have? if you said China, you guessed correctly. and the record unemployment we have now is due almost exclusively to manufacturing job losses. where do you think all that manufacturing (and the many billions of dollars associated with that) went to? Yes, the same place all your shiny Apple products are made. China. And as the owner of all our debt, who do you think we pay tens of billions of dollars in loan interest to, every year? Yes, China.

China is the new world super power. Their military is 6 times the size of ours. And we are the ones funding it all. We just haven't realized it yet.

Now THAT is a "scary thought".
