Scheduled CHMOD Reset - PLEASE HELP!

I have a mixed office where MS Office files keep getting their permissions saved as read-only. Every once in a while I go in and reset the permissions for a folder with BATCHMOD.

But for some reason a couple of the systems are doing this more and more frequently and I am sick of hearing how the "server is broken".

Anyone know of a reliable way to schedule a permissions reset using Automator or...?

Can you give more info on the server it is residing on. Resetting permissions on a schedule would not be the best solution as it is just a bandaid for a larger underlying issue.

good point about the band aid.

It is a snow leopard server with a shared folder that everyone has access to read and write from (there are other, secure directories, but this common folder is the one with issues).

When I look at the permissions on a file it shows everyone has read / write.

When I load this file in Excel, make a change, and then save, I get a:

Access is denied. Contact your system Administrator

Some users ARE able to save, but then the file becomes READ only.

band aid, band aid...

it's a good comment - and appreciated. I re-applied my ACL and for the moment that seems to be working and I believe that to be what the larger underlying issue was.

I was fixated on the POSIX settings and missed the fact that the ACL wasn't looking right.

Do you have any suggestions / commentary on loading Office files directly from a server in such a way that the permissions do NOT get messed up?

I wouldn't want them to be copying them to a local system, working on them, and then sending them back to their original location...

I have set "everyone" to "full control" for now...

Oh PLEASE let me get some down time for Christmas... I'm about to start showing up at this customer's office with a shotgun soon... =)

I haven't found any sure fire way unfortunately. Re-ACLing will def. help though. I tell my users never work directly from the share drive. At first they kicked and screamed but after a few months of not calling me I realized they were happy that things worked now.

so the problem persists.

word and excel files saved onto a shared mac sharepoint with ACL of Everyone = Full Control often gets READ only permission.

I am new to Automator and cannot find a way to simply get it to select the top folder (data) and then propogate Everyone = Full Control every night at 10 PM.

Does anyone have ANY insight into this?
