School for computers

I know just enough about Macs and computers in general that I think I am interested in looking into is as a career. I'm getting ready to go back to college, with little to nothing in education under my belt. I'm just curious what people would suggest as a direction to go when looking for classes, schools, etc. Like I said, I have a little experience with computers, but not much. I grew up with my dad working for Boeing, he did a lot of computer stuff (I couldn't tell you what exactlty) so I grew up knowing how to use them. But I have never taken any classes, read any real books on how computers work in general. I just don't want to get stuck learning all about PC's by taking the fist computer class I look at, I really don't have much of an interest, unless it's really necessary for a good foundation in computers in genreal.

Consulting?

The list goes on. Find what you want to do then find a place to suit you. There are a lot of different directions you could go. I would just say to stay away from any school that advertises on T.V.


If it's the Semiconductor industry you want to get into I would go for a BS in Chen Eng. or Electrical Eng.

Try to figure out what on computers you want to do. Years ago I studied computer science as OSU but the things I learned were more along the lines of programming for a bank. I ultimately ended up writing consumer educational and game software. Very different stuff then what I learned in school. So basically try to target your computer area a little bit. The first couple years of college are fairly general anyway. Good luck.

What kind of computer things interest you?

- Networking

- Programming

- Designing/Building

- Maintaining

- Applying them (using application software)

As for learning PCs, if you are going to learn about computers then you will end up learning about PCs (Windows, Unix, etc.) along the way. The world is PC based so most classes that you will take will be based upon the PC.

School choice will depend on what path you want to take.

How do I find out what I want to do? All I have ever done on computers is dink around online, write papers, etc. I have never learned how to program, I learned a little but not much about web design.... I guess I just don't know where to start.

think of what you like about computers. what do you like so much you're willing to do it every day for the next 30 years (possibly)?

me, i like the interface - changing icons, messing with the look of stuff, etc. so if i were going to pursue a career in computers, i'd look into graphic design or something similar.

Go to one of the job sites and search computer. Then you will get an idea what types of jobs are out there, and even how much you can get paid for various jobs.
