I was wondering if there was someway to run a server like one at a school where applications are on the internal drive, but documents (home folder) are stored on the server and you have to log in with a username and password. I would want to run the server off of a time capsule or an external hard drive attached to it or an airport extreme. Thanks!

I'm not sure about the TC, but with an external disk on an AEBS, you can mount the disk in Finder. Automate that so it mounts on boot, then you can move the data to the shared disk. Next modify the directory structure in Terminal so it links to the AEBS' disk:

ln -s /path/to/shared/folder/Documents DocumentsSeems like overkill for what's needed.
Mac OS X Server license or Mac Mini with OS X Server is just fine.
That noisy @$$ Xserve in the backroom next to the other servers, that overkill.
I don't see a mention of an Xserve anywhere and I don't believe OS X Server is needed. It sounds like the OP just wants to produce the same effect at home using an external drive hanging off an AEBS.
