Hello,

I am working with my high school webmaster to redo our school website because people have been saying it looks outdated (http://lahser.bloomfield.org).

Anyways, we were thinking about using CSS for the next one. This is what we have so far linky. One thing I noticed is that the bar across the top does not show up in anything but safari. I was wondering if anyone could help try and fix that.

Comments are also appreciated for the current and potential future site.

Thanks

[Edit] We recently uploaded a new site to the lahser.bloomfield.org link. I don't have a link to the old one anymore. The other one that was referenced in this post has been scrapped. So comments on the site posted at lahser.bloomfield.org would be appreciated.

it is a really really busy site. Maybe have seperate pages because I don't even know where my eyes should be. The color bar also seems a little pointless- I mean the colors are quite distracting. Keep it simple. I'm on firefox, and I like the top bar, with the home and stuff- very simple yet usaable.

I like the top bar and the overall layout. Great job!

Some thoughts...

-The yellow, even if it is a school color, is almost painful. Maybe soften it up somehow
-Keep to one theme. You have the site going into too many directions/colors. Simplify! Try and coordinate colors.
-I agree about removing the coor bar
-The mouseovers seem distracting with the black.

Hey. I think the site is really nice! Yeah, the old site needs improvement. My school's site has been hacked continuously so they had to throw up their "Back-Up" site. If you want to check it out:

The photo of your school in the updated site looks nothing like the photo in the original...why?

The reason that it looks nothing the same is that I am lazy. I would have had to strech the other image and didn't really want to distort it, so I used a totally different picture.

On another note, the webmaster and I have decided upon an site that we both like. You can find it at this link. They did not want to change it from the original too much so this is what we settled upon. Comments are appreciated.

it doesn't look that much different from the original site... so then how does that appease those who said it looked outdated?

Well, what happened when we tried to change the site around, is the administrators at the school didn't want to. They said that people were used to the old site and we should keep it the same. So we changed the design to css and added a bit more color.

btw, we have uploaded the new one with the yellow boxes to the actual site, so both the original and the new now look the same.

Thats good advice I think, my University changed its website about 3 times in 2 years and it was always a challenge to find where everything had gone. Luckily their newest version is quite similar to their first (http://www.manchester.ac.uk). Incremental changes are always the best way to go.

EXCELLENT site. I am forwarding to our web team so they can steal it! ;)

But are they different schools? Did you use a stock picture for your site or is that the actual school?

The "new" site is okay, but I do have some thoughts....
Most of the info people want to see seems to be on the right. The left is pretty crowded with "news". If it were me (which it's NOT!) I'd move the info on students, parents, district, departments etc. on the left. We read left to right, so it's natural to start there when visiting the page. Also , the logical groups needs to be looked at, and it's too hard to find things quickly. The top bar is superfluous... I'd lose it... or make it smaller or better yet incorporate it into a BETTER picture of the school.
Full disclosure: As I speak, I can't get OUR web team to make changes to OUR monstrosity. It hasn't been updated in FIVE years, and has morphed over that time into the realm of "World's Worst Web Site" catagory. (www.mchs.net)
I'm the director, so maybe I can hire you to do OURS. You seem to know what you're doing... :)

The picture of the building with the fountain is one from my trip to london. The one that is on there now is the actual picture of the school.

EAST AURORA? The "Land of the AS400 and technology at least 5 years behind the world" Aurora East?
I played golf with the superintendent every Friday for years.

Woah, I live in East Aurora and go to East Aurora HS, but I'm guessing there is more than one East Aurora HS?
