So the Sci-Fi channel has finally become SyFy, I'm sure most of you know the reason name change is that you can't trademark a genre. SO they went with y's and dropped the silent c. I don't think it's that bad as some have said, I actually like the symmetry it presents in the over all appearance.

As for the Design, I think it's excellent. Regular viewers might perceive it as boring but coupled with the deep purple " Imagine Greater " slogan, the off white letters look great with the effects given. I like the depth and the dark shadows, I think it looks much better than the glossy glass look that's being overused right now. I especially like the glow the the top right of the logo gives off reflecting from the typeface to the background.

The Design was done by Proud Creative go HERE to check out there site

They also designed the show spot holders like this one. The colors are simple and bold which I like also.

Also check out the stunning Video spots at the bottom of their site, I like the first one the best. So what do you guys think of it?

Also post the first video on my site ( link in my sig )

Lipstick on a pig…
Well if the us sci fi channel is anything like the uk one i have to agree, there has been no sci fi on the sci fi channel in 5 years here. We get angel and buffy and some crappy horror movies.

Lipstick on a pig…

Brand Paradigm Shifting... If it didn't work for Coke, nab, David Jones or KFC why would someone think it would be a good idea to screw around with an established entity...

Bad idea I can see this go > SciFi > SyFy > Scifi

I do agree with the lipstick on pig stuff, I think they really needed BattleStar to stay on at their own expense plus other shows like it.

I see your point of it going back to SciFi but the whole reason they changed it was due to the fact they couldn't trademark, maybe they'll realize it won't matter and go back, but I still like this DESIGN better.

^They're hoping that Caprica will be their next BSG. I did enjoy the 2 hour teaser bit. It could honestly go either way as this will definitely be more plot/drama based than BSG.

I'm not a designer by any stretch of the imagination, but the logo is clean and simple. Not sure I dig the font so much though.

My 2¢

Caprica was definitely AWESOME! :D

I haven't watched Sci Fi since they canceled the original Farscape. I really loved it then, and it was my Friday night wind-down after a long week at work.

Since this is Design and Graphics, I don't care for the new logo much. It is too industrial and the color choice is bland. As for the movie display at the designers website, I think the whole concept is a bad ides. Sci Fi is based in Australia where house spiders kill people for real and they make a movie of it?

Dale

+1 for this one. Anyone remember the Y2K New Years ads? Emails from the far future telling us we would be OK. Loved it.

Here is a rendering I did in Ai and Ps of the new style with the old spelling.

I know not as good as the original I'm still learning, couldn't get the main text shadow right.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I truly loved that logo. It wasn't, in your face, if you will. The font choice was better too.

The SciFi channel's demise is a key reason I didn't get cable or a dish when I moved to a new state.

It used to be a top 5 channel. Then 10. Then, once a month or so. And then every so often, I'd look to see if I even *recognized* anything they were showing.

So sad.

This new name/logo is just a continuation of that trend. Science Fiction. Two big words, each with many implications, together they were magic. Now? Syfy. Just keep dumbing it down please.

Personally, I think the logo and the name change are long over due. If they can follow through with the same quality in their programming that the new logo provokes, then I'm all for it.

But then again, right now my favorite show on there is Eureka, I mean BSG was a good show, but I think, just like many shows, it ran its course and it was time to move on finally. Now, if they can re-invigorate their current programming schedule (maybe upping their production budgets) with the same efforts that went into this rebranding, then I say "hell yeah!"

Dono what your us SyFy channel is like but if it is anything like ours how about some Sci Fi programs and not buffy, angel, horror movies. Or is this re branding so they can buy more cheep non sci fi programs.

I don't really have that much of a problem with the new logo/name. It's not that bad and will probably grow on most of us. But, I still don't like the fact that the channel has non-syfy shows such as ECW, Scare Tactics and Estate of Panic or whatever.

Syfy = StuPid

I know one of the reasons they're doing this is because "SciFi" can't be trademarked, or copyrighted or something important like that in the same way you can't for "blue" - hence Blutooth, Blu-Ray, etc.

But seriously, do they think re-branding is going to save the channel? I feel like it has kind of lost its way - some of their original movies are great, a lot are OK, some are horrible. Likewise, they seem to be jumping more on the cheaper to make reality series train, and in general unwilling to spend the kind of money they used to on licensing rights to cool stuff and getting experienced directors/producers in for their series.

I don't think today's Syfy would have made the Dune movies that SciFi did a few years back, nor do I think it would take a chance on a series like Farscape. Maybe it's a sign of the times, or the economy, or simple greed or the fact that the channel has changed owners several times throughout its history, but it seems like SciFi is getting past its prime and in need of an intervention.

Remember - things went downhill when NBC purchased the network.

Back in the Science Fiction days, it was owned by USA Networks (also a great network).

USA Had:
Monk
Dead Zone
Peacemakers
Other cool series (can't remember them all)
USA Network Movies

SciFi had:
Farscape
Stargate SG-1

The networks had of course "Law & Order" and "CSI: Yet in another city" and "Hospital Series" and reality shows. People were flocking to the cable/dish networks. I heard that even Producers were flocking to those stations as they didn't stand a chance in trying to introduce something new/cool on the major 3.

Well, if you can't beat 'em, BUY THEM...

NBC/Universal bought USA Networks.

The first thing they did was cancel Farscape at the end of season 4 (even though it was made clear that the show would run only 5 total).

They then told Stargate, if they wanted to continue, to get rid of one of the major characters (Dr. Jackson) and put a new face in (that's a whole other story).

They cancelled a bunch of great shows on USA Network as well...

Then, it's all downhill from there.

Now we get reality shows and ECW...

I don't know why See Fee even bothers with Stargate - you can get that on iTunes instead...

Just saw Warehouse 13! Is was actually pretty good can't wait for Eureka tonight :) I also saw the another animation intro with purple liquid, really cool. I guess I'm the only one who likes the rebranding :D
