What is the point of the posts on this thread? Half of you clowns probably never even heard of this man prior to reading this news so you are saying good riddance or apple is falling just so you are on a bandwagon.

And the rest of you are taking this a little too personal as if you worked with the guy personally for years and years.

Too bad Apple Maps will not be up and running in time for Scott to use it to locate a new job.

He's a smart man. He'll just get a galaxy s3 and use Google maps

We won't miss ya! :D

Sir Ive, we are all excited for what you'll have for us in iOS 7

I'm pretty juiced about that too! iOS 6 was a pretty small update. I'm sure Jony can take it new heights.

If you read the press release carefully, you can glean a lot of information:

Jony Ive: He's awesome, he "get it", and he's got great taste. So in addition to his usual duties in hardware, we're letting him influence our interfaces too.

Eddy Cue: Our online services did great stuff with iTunes, the App Store, and iCloud, so let's hope he can fix Siri and Maps.

Hair Force One: One person will lead iOS and OS X software development. Expect even tighter integration and cross-polination of ideas. Perhaps even a merger at some point (?)

Mansfield: This group has ambitious plans for the future, especially over the next two years (before he leaves). Expect plenty of custom Apple silicon.

John Browett sucks. We're already looking for a replacement. We'd rather have nobody in his spot than have him there.

That pretty much sums it up. I'm gonna put it out there and say that something enormous and awesome is coming in 2014!! Macs on ARM? iOS X? Touchscreen Macs? Who knows.

Many of us have been following Apple for years. Maybe that's not the same as working for Apple or being Scott Forstall's co-worker. But that's enough for us to comment on the direction that Forstall's projects have taken over his career. We're plenty familiar with Apple's executive team, as much as any member of the public can be.

I don't wish Forstall any ill-will, but I'm glad that Jony Ive is taking over. Ive may not be the coding geek that Forstall is, but right now iOS does not live up to Apple's standard of taste or elegance.

This has given me a renewed interest in iPhones. I was seriously sick of the lack of change and that the greatest thing they did in recent years was notification centre.

Looking forward to something new. Maybe we will finally get a weather icon that updates!!!

I'm glad he's gone.

Steve Jobs is to Tom Brady as Scott Forstall is to Ryan Leaf. When Jobs yelled at you for not doing your job well, you respected him because he was the best at what he did. When Forstall yells at you, all you see is a self-entitled brown noser who fell ass backwards into high ranking positions whose adult shoes he could never fill.

The respect isn't there and never will be, and for good reason.

I don't have a problem with skeuomorphisms. I have a problem with fugly design, and iOS is full of them thanks to Forstall's "leadership."

It's time for him to convince some venture capitalists to throw some money his way based on his past titles, and watch it vaporize when he can't deliver on his own.

:apple:

only time will tell whether this is a good move or not. i think forstall is a force in the mobile space and that he has an incredibly bright future. granted the calendar and game station apps are in poor taste.

UAD, regarded by many as leaders in analog and digital music gear have long employed essentially skeuomorphic designs with "authentic" recreations of vintage gear people love. another good example imho is the evp88:

i335880_EVP88.png

taken to its logical end non-skeuomorphic design can be cold, utilitarian and utterly bland, lacking in texture and substance.

i feel just because a surface is glass doesn't mean implying texture and various other materials is bad taste. there can be an inherent warmth and character in good skeuomorphic design

anyways the consolidation of osx and ios teams is interesing. maybe in the future apple will be looking to unify both operating systems and finally bring touch to their mac products, one can dream right ?

There's nothing that's there except for the ****ed up uninformed media or fanatics who don't understand what skeuomorphism really means. Just because some specific person has a different sense of design, he must be fired for all he has done for Apple and NeXT in the last 25 years.

Let's not forget, he is the same guy who was involved in Aqua which we all loved and still love. He is the one who was so deeply involved with Mac OS X and iOS since their inception.

What a shame!

Apple must know what a lost this has been then. There has to be something big behind the scenes the public does not know.

Today I learned that there's a word for what I absolutely HATED about some computer UI design: Skeuomorphic. That this scourge can be identified by name, and that a large proponent of it at Apple has been fired, gives me great optimism about the future of Apple software.

Like most things, a tiny bit of it is OK (like having a little picture of a metronome in the metronome button in Logic), but it's gotten way out of hand (not so much in Logic though).

I feel the same way. I didn't know all those cheesy retro gimmicks had a name. For years, I had just been calling them "cheesy retro gimmicks". Skeuomorphism took a bit of research on my part, but it was like a revolation to learn about.

I think the news that Forstall being fired is probably the biggest news out of Apple HQ since Steve's passing. I always remembered hearing that where Jobs went, Forstall followed - and Steve saw something in Scott.

-----

I think I'm ok with this already. Looking back at most of what Scott was involved with, I can say that a lot of what his team did, I didn't like.

I think the biggest part of this was changed over the first few iOS versions - the original Calculator app that was a ripoff of an iconic calculator. Just like the Clock is on iPad app - which Apple also got flack for.

-----

THANKFULLY Apple got rid of that YouTube app with the retro TV. I felt that was always a slap in the face to Google and YouTube - a stick-your-tongue-out, take-that to anyone who tried to find something positive about YouTube on iOS devices.

Does this mean we can get rid of the...
1) Retro iPad clock
2) Retro microphone in Voice Memos
3) Retro Calendar appearance (and awful leather stitching across all apps)
4) Retro leather look that also plagues Find My Friends
5) Retro Contacts application on the Mac
6) Retro Game Center table appearance
7) Retro Passbook paper shredder - the ultimate cheese-fest eye-candy
8) Retro lined paper and leather binding in Reminders

The stuff I wouldn't mind keeping...
1) Camera shutter
2) Appearance of the Compass app
3) Apple Trailers red and gold color scheme
4) Woodgrain themes of iBooks, iTunes U, and Newsstand

Everything else is just... cheesy retro gimmicks...

Ok. I feel better now. :)

Right, but who's going to be pushing for that playfulness now? With Ive at the helm of both hardware and software design, he's got more power now than ever to pull away from such "Apple-isms" that we've come to know and love.

Yeah, that's a silly argument though. Whoever thinks that Jonny will sacrifice art and playfulness for something that is stale and Boring is dead wrong. Remember that he's the one that brought the psychedelic iMacs back when khaki PCs were the norm.

In the same way, I can see him bring the fun to the UI. Again, look how playful the iPod lineup looks like this year.

So basically what we have learnt is that Steve was keeping it together and that there are all kinds of lunatics running the Apple camp.

Well, one could argue that by firing Forstall, Tim Cook is doing just that: keeping together.

Bye bye Scott. Now I won't have to fast forward through keynotes ;)

No kidding. It was painful to watch him. That fake excitement about everything being "incredible" and "amazing" is nauseating. Somehow, Steve got away with it - he had conviction in his performance. Watching Forstall trying to emulate it was cringe-worthy.

Absolutely my point. I am not saying Forstall didn't do anything wrong. He sure must have. But things like Skeuomorphism, maps dont break it.

Maps is extremely hard and AI takes time. You can't change science.

That's it then.

The ship that is Apple cannot stay afloat without Jobs.

So what if Forstall is abrasive? ****** corporate yes people ruin everything.

Too bad Apple Maps will not be up and running in time for Scott to use it to locate a new job.

He will never need another job again, and I'm sure he doesn't need maps to find his way back home.

There's obviously more to the story than Forestall being fired for supporting skeumorphic designs. If the rumors are true, multiple members of the exec staff didn't get along with him that well. Who knows what all the reasons are but I'd they're team players and Forstall is not maybe Cook decided he finally had to do something about it.

There must have been some bad blood as in the announcement there was only one sentence thanking Forstall. Basically nothing compared to what Cook wrote when Mansfield decided to retire. I can only guess Forstall pissed enough people off - whether it was taking credit for things he didn't do, or sticking his nose where it wasn't wanted - that he had to go.

During the iPad mini event I remember thinking he didn't look very happy. When cook first came out on stage Forstall clapped but it was tepid and no smile on his face. In contrast both Ive and Mansfield had big smiles on their faces and seemed in good spirits throughout the event. Now we know why Forstall wasn't happy at the event.

And lets not feel sorry for them. I'm sure their golden parachutes will be spectacular.
