There's nothing that's there except for the ****ed up uninformed media or fanatics who don't understand what skeuomorphism really means. Just because some specific person has a different sense of design, he must be fired for all he has done for Apple and NeXT in the last 25 years.

Let's not forget, he is the same guy who was involved in Aqua which we all loved and still love. He is the one who was so deeply involved with Mac OS X and iOS since their inception.

What a shame!

We all love Aqua?? Bubbly blue candy buttons, how wonderfully hideous.

Anyway, skeumorphic crap is totally unoriginal. Take an old design and wedge it onto a screen. Please. Maybe instead of dialing a phone # with buttons Forstall should have used a rotary dial.

Who cares about his past. He sucks now, that's all that matters and that's why he's gone.

:apple:

Big trouble at Apple. Stock should tank $50 on Tuesday.

Cook has symbolically fired Steve Jobs in the grave. Ive is not qualified beyond picking the copper paint on the 20th Annivesary Mac. :(

You gotta be kidding. Scott Forstall wanted, badly, to be Steve Jobs. But he's not. He's just an Elvis impersonator, and an especially annoying one at that.

I should add that Scott is probably a good developer, having been on the NeXT team. But he has no taste and his ideas were bad, and you can only have Steve Jobs arrogance if your ideas and taste are better than everyone else's.

Yes, I am kidding, of course. The fact that Steve Jobs was ousted before, that Scott Forstall was considered to be successor to Steve Jobs, and now is being ousted makes for a compelling irony.

What will happen today with a AAPL?

Anyone's guess, probably. My guess though, is that the stock will go up in light of this news. I think investors will see this as a good thing. Both because Forestall is out, and mostly because of Ives' increased responsibilities and oversight.

I personally think that Scott Forstall embodied all of the bad traits of Steve Jobs, without any of the good. Johnny Ives, I think, embodies all of the good traits of Steve Jobs without any of the bad. Ives' increased influence, responsibility and oversight – coupled with Tim Cook's steady handed but firm leadership, makes for a great Apple, In my opinion. Both of them are extremely levelheaded, mature, gifted and capable. I believe they will make a great team for the next-generation of Apple.

No one deserves to be kicked to the street when they have done so much.

I hope Scott lands well and ends up where he can be better appreciated.

He has millions of dollars, if not hundreds of millions, WHO CARES. Glad to see him go.

I don't think bankrolling his responsibilities elsewhere was a good call, personally. That said, Ive in charge of universal design makes sense.

Sounds like this guy was an ass and the maps fiasco was an excuse to boot him. His style fit well with Jobs's confrontational managerial style, but that doesn't seem to mesh well with Cook and crew. Forstall essentially is a mini jobs, minus all the perks it would seem.

Honestly the firing of Forestall makes me happy. I really feel like iOS has been held back over the past few years, prevented from massive overhauls that up the experience to levels beyond what we can imagine. I know this is big dreaming, but I think he was so set on his old ways, that the next iteration if iOS is going to be a pretty big overhaul. Let's hope the overhaul catches Android and Windows Phone 8 with their pants down and completely changes the industry again!

I know wishful thinking, but it could be done! Honestly if Apple incorporated that haptic touch tech that makes it possible to feel textures and such on screens, that alone would poop all over the competition. Who wouldn't want to feel a keyboard as if it were real, while still keeping the simple, screen design?

Idk, so many possibilities and I'm keeping my hopes high for the future!

Conspiracy Theory:

Jony Ives to Tim Cook: "Either get rid of him, or I am out."

Cook: "See ya Scott..."

Jony: "Give me control over the total package, hardware and software"

Cook: "Sounds good to me, you have great taste"

Jony: "Get our faces on the front page of apple.com right now...

Cook: "Done"

Another thing to think about - how many ideas were killed due to his personality? Updates to iOS were not very impressive compared with some of the innovations that Android was coming out with. Sometimes the top man doesn't evolve with the market and you are seeing a tired iOS that could be a result of that mentality. We don't know how much Jobs was tempering the design trends and Forstall may have felt threatened by others critiquing his work.

Ok, I'm not going to chime in and pretend I know what the **** I'm talking about.

Can someone explain to me the ****-ups Scott Forstall had and why I'm just now realizing that 95% of MacRumors is celebrating his leave like America celebrated Osama's death?

I fail to see where all this hate is coming from.

Thanks

I'll give you something profound: You can swipe down from the top to reveal notification center. You can't swipe up from the bottom to reveal multitasking bar. How blatantly incompetent can he be for not having this in iOS 5, let alone iOS 6. Not only would it reduce physical wear of the Home Button, it would be much faster and intuitive, given their approach to notification center. Simply put, the iOS team had no ideas, it was pathetic, hopefully now we will see some actual features come to light. It isn't hard to think of great features, which makes me adore the firing of Forstall.

I don't think you will see a major difference until iOS 8 is released. Maybe some new ideas with iOS 7 but it is going to take some major work together with the hardware to make a significant difference. You may see the dropping of iOS upgrades to older phone models due to hardware limits.

Saw this at the WSJ. Ouch.

"This was better than the Giants winning the World Series. People are really excited."
– A senior Apple employee, who asked not to be named, describing the mood at the company upon the news of Scott Forstall’s departure.

Am I only the only scared ******** at the thought of giving Jony Ive more power??

Absolutely love it. Hope he gets more in the future, HIGHLY intelligent, and humble person. Apple is going in the right direction, I see hope in the future, and I have much more faith in Tim Cook.

This is crazyness.. Guess Apple doesn't like skeumorphism.. I personally don't mind it

Why not have it as an option as part of a skin that can be applied? That is one of the most significant oversights that iOS had, the limits on personalization of the display.

My guess is he still has a non-compete in place that would prevent him from working in the same field for a direct competitor for a while. He'll probably do something more like Tony Fadell. Work on something completely different for a while like Nest.

B

Surely this guy is richer than $deity -- why would he work at all? Of course, why's he working today even?

Guys, why Steve jobs did protect him? What is good in him? There should be something that others don't understand.

Surely there is. Nobody is saying Forstall has no talent. Everybody has some talent, and there's always something others don't get. But that's not the point

Now, as far as Steve Jobs' endorsement of this guy, I doubt thats relevant once he's gone as CEO. As admired as he was, and as missed as he is, Jobs was neither a technical genius nor a model manager. Apple's success was built by many more other than Steve Jobs. So if Apple wants to keep its status, it has to turn the page by honestly acknowledging Jobs' virtues and flaws, and rectify. His management skills were among the latter.

Many reports point at this guy being a self-serving prick. Many reports said the same about Steve. Maybe that's why he identified himself with Forstall, but that's not the way to run an innovation based business in the long run.

But in any case.... who really cares?

cheers!

iOS really hasn't changed much pre or post Steve's death, and I get the feeling that the lack of advancement has mainly stemmed from Apple's hubris rather than from Forstall's focus. Of course I'm not actually basing my opinion on any evidence other than a gut feeling like so many others posters have done, since we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes.

I'm very curious about how future versions of iOS will look now that Ive has much greater influence, but I have to admit that I love the skeumorphism - it's what gives iOS it's charm. Having said that, skeumorphism has no place in OS X.
