Is the scratch on the surface of the glass or underneath?

I discovered a faint scratch or discoloration on the panel of my 24" aluminum iMac after 5 months of use and sent in to Apple. They replaced the LCD panel.

Unless this is something you did to the machine if it is a defect of the glass panel I see no reason why they wouldn't replace it for you. Since there are no alu iMacs over 6 months old it would most definitely be free service under the one year warranty.
