Scratch remover and speed increase for white imac?

One of my family's macs (our second... the first is an SE/30 and it is working like a dream still) is a white intel imac. There are some scratches in the case and since the clear plastic seems pretty thick I can't help but wonder if there is a way to buff out, polish, or fill the scratches. Anybody got any ideas? Also, it is starting to feel a little sluggish (compared to how it used to feel), and I was wondering if anybody had any tips for getting this thing running at full speed again. It isn't snow leopard yet, just the non-snow variety, so that will probably help, but is there anything else? On windows one can defrag the disk and crap like that... anything like that on the mac? I can't stand to have things that aren't like or better than new :p
 
HDDs work more efficiently when they have more empty space.

As for repairing the HDD some, go to your applications, then utilities, then disk utility, then verify and repair your permissions for your hdd.
 
Definitely max out the RAM and consider a faster hard drive.

Try to leave a minimum of 10% available hard drive space and ensure you have done the permissions and disk repairs as previously stated.

meh idk I was still fairly young when we got it.

Checked wikipedia and it looks like it is an early 2006 model (1680x1050 display). It's the 250 gb hd and we haven't upgraded the memory so it should be 512 mb (wow that's low hahahaa). I don't think it's the later 2006 models because wikipedia says they used displays that aren't 1680x1050.

If its the Core Duo model :)apple: -> About this Mac...) then 2GB is the max you can put in and you should have that as anything less will feel slow with Leo.
 
Don't know if it is the standard 128 mb of ram or the optional 256 mb, but I am assuming it is the 128. Any way to find out on disk utilities or something?

Thanks. Anybody got ideas for the scratches in the clear casing? We wanna see if this can last us another 4 years.
 
I would suggest Novus Plastic polish in regards to the scratches on the white plastic case. Google search for Novus. Trust me this stuff will take out the meanest scratches on clear, solid and translucent polycarbonate plastics. Use Novus 2 or 3 for deep scratches. I have used the product on both ipods and and white ibooks and Macbooks and it works well, I figure it should work just as well on a white imac as the plastic finish is similar to white mabooks and ipods.
