My New iMac, just over a month old started making this horrible noise last night while we were putting, to be fair a lot of photos into iPhoto. it sounded like a scratching/hissing noise possibly from one of the fans would be my best guess. iPhoto crashed a few times but we managed to get the photos on and it seemed to be fine. This morning I turn it on and while the strange scratching/hissing noise seems to of gone the fans are going crazy! They seem to be in overdrive.

My advice, as it's only a month old, don't muck about trying to fault find.
Call Applecare or take it back to the Apple Store and get it replaced.

Phone up applecare - this is almost certainly a hardware issue, and you can't disassemble the machine yourself (well, not easily)! Alternatively go into your apple store and make an appointment at the genius bar.

Yeah I was thinking the same, it's a month old.

I shut it down and switched it back on again and after few try's it's started acting normally again but surly it shouldn't of done that in the first place.
