It only goes off automatically if you set sleep mode up or put on battery saver.

The other way it goes off is when you have an apple watch on and move away from the phone.

I don’t have Apple Watch, sleep mode is off, battery saver is off.
I want to use it nightstand.

That's actually a cool idea. If you charge it overnight it should have some sort of night stand feature.
