I just decided to check if some of the stuff on my screen that looked like dead pixels was really just (fairy) dust. And lo and behold, it was! So what I thought was a 2-3 dead pixel screen was actually pixelperfect. Unfortunately the cleaning process has left the mac in a bit of a mess. I´ll try to explain:
I first had to get the glass cover off the screen. Following this recipe on youtube I used some brown tape to remove the glass. Problem was that this made two of the pins fastening the glass fall off (one on each side). I don´t know if they´re not fastened properly, or if´s just some way for Apple to know if you´ve messed around with your mac. Anyway, one of the pins scratched the side of the glass-cover, so be careful when pulling it off.
Next, I cleaned the screen with the Apple cleaning cloth, but it didn´t do much, so I had to use some water and also an Oakley pouch (microfiber). This got away most of the marks and dust on the screen and also at the inside of the glass. I also tried using compressed air, like some of the videos on youtube show, but that left large cloudy areas and I just had to use the cloth again. The replacement of the glass can also be a bit cumbersome because of the magnets holding it in place, so I managed to scratch the sides of the screen a little bit, nothing bad though.
Now my screen at least don´t have any fingerprint smudges on the inside of the glass. But when the brightness dims down you can see a "cloudy" kind of screen surface, especially on a black background. It´s also slightly visible when the lights are dimmed, and when there is a gradient background. Maybe it´s because I used water and this will evaporate over time? I remember doing the same cleaning process on my MBP, and the halo/cloud effect slowly diminshed after a week or so.
All in all I´m happy with the screen cleaning. beware that the instructions on the different Youtube vids suck, in the way they don´t warn you what might be problematic (like the loose pins, potential scratches from removing the glass, and that you clearly shouldn´t use compressed air).
Edit1: Read somewhere on the net that microfiber cloth destroys the LCD-screen over time. Is this for real?
Edit2: The screen is a lot less cloudy now, like I thought this was just temporarily. Will buy IKlear on monday and reckon it will look even better. Anyone use this on the iMac screen (behind the glass)?
