When I make a clip from my screen, it temporarily is located near the lower right of my screen. If I right click it, of the various options are save to desktop, to downloads, and to clipboard.

Frequently, my intention is to paste it into an email, iMessage, or WhatsApp. If I select clipboard it is not copied to there. If I select desktop, it is then placed there and can be dragged or "copy-paste" where I wish it to be.

What am I doing wrong such that the easy, obvious, copy to clipboard fails?

Thanks!

I alway use Cmd-ctrl-shift-4 to do the above - works fine for me!

@njvm, thanks. I'd found that method in searching, but FOR ME, it doesn't work. Thus I'm just thick, I guess.

If you want to clip something to the clipboard, do you have it displayed on the screen, do the 4 key chord:))), click and drag a box, release mouse clicker, and it's there? Or am I missing a step.

Yes - to take a clip of your above post, I do the following:

  • Press Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-4
    • A selection cursor appears on the screen
  • Move the Selection Cursor to the point where you want to take a screenshot
  • Depress the Mouse at the point that you want to start the selection and drag (keeping the mouse depressed)
  • Release pressure on the mouse at the point that you want to finish the selection
  • The image is now copied to the Clipboard
  • Move to where you want to paste the image and enter Ctrl+V

I don't know where the control key comes in. I just use command-shift-4 to drag over the image (starting in the upper left corner). When I let go, it's saved on my desktop. From there I can drag it into another app or use the Share Menu in the top menu of the screenshot to share it to Notes, Messages, etc.

Edited to add: ok my mistake. I see that the control key is what copies it to the universal clipboard. Aha. Learned something new. It's a bit awkward though hitting all four but I'm sure it works well for some.
