The heat above the F2 key on my MBP is so hot.

Has anyone ever had LCD screen damage or warp as a result of running the notebook with the lid closed...?

I thought running the MBP while the lid was closed is a big no no? Heat vents from the keyboard, thus you cut off air circulation with it closed

On the current line of notebooks, it's an Apple-approved feature to run in closed-lid mode with external monitor/keyboard/mouse attached. So I'd imagine it's been well-tested and shouldn't pose any problems. (Then again, we've seen that Apple isn't perfect in quality control. But either way, you should be covered if there was a problem with it since they specifically instruct you how to do it.)

Old iBooks used to vent heat through the keyboard, but the modern machines don't.

Nope...

Nope, not true. iBooks vented from the keyboard, but powerbooks, macbooks and macbook pros all vent in the back. They were DESIGNED with closed lid operation in mind.

If there is a lot of heat coming from the keyboard, something is wrong.

You aren't by any chance one of the (very few) people whose MacBook Pro came with a transparent plastic film over the rear vent, are you? Perhaps it's worth checking. At least one MBP user reported it.
