Screen dimming only when apps are open

Ive just set up my 2010 Mini to a new TV. The home screen looks fantastic, with bright and vivid colours. There is a problem however when I open up an app or a separate screen. As soon as the application opens, the screen dims - not massively, but by approximately 10%.
Is this a setting I need to adjust, or any ideas what the problem could be? I had this on my old TV, and this was never an issue.
