screen goes to sleep during gps turn-by-turn

after some research, I determined this specifically happens if you activate apple maps navigation via Siri. if you just open maps regularly then the screen will stay on as expected.

but that's kind of absurd; the main use case for navigation is driving, which is exactly the hands free environment where you'd want to be able to use Siri.

after googling around, supposedly this issue has been around at least since iOS 11 (a release I'd skipped entirely). so I'm just curious if this happens to anyone who opens maps via Siri, or if its an isolated bug that some sort of settings reset might fix. I don't want to reset for the heck of it, because reconfiguring stuff is a pain, and apple has let their software slide to a state of bugginess where you could easily be told to "try resetting" every couple days.

Apple maps turns the screen off when navigating yes. But turns it on again before a turn. It’s a feature to save battery.

I really like it and one of the reasons I use it instead of google maps. Now I have CarPlay though so that doesn’t matter anymore.

its a feature for some but a frustration for me. part of the benefit of gps for me is to be able to quickly glance at progress, upcoming traffic issues, etc.

also if its a feature, then the feature has a bug where it *does* stay on if you don't use Siri. so no matter how you cut it, its kinda a mess.

interesting, I'm definitely trying to see if this is isolated or global to iOS 12. do you activate navigation via Siri or do you open the app by hand before you start driving?

yeah that had always been the case for me as well, but now it turns off even when plugged in and charging. I also have the usb accessories lock feature and do not disturb while driving both turned off, just in case they had introducing some sort of buggy behaviour.

If you want the Maps to stay on screen all the time, you can open it up manually (click on the app icon or its widget) and let it guide you. If at any point during your journey you tap on a sleep-wake button while Maps are on, the screen will go dark, but will come back on again well in advance of your next manoeuvre. As others have mentioned, it’s a power saving trick, but you are not forced to use it. I am not sure why Siri defaults to it, though, I guess Apple is an over-cautious nanny.

I still suspect its a bug because the binary for staying on always vs turning off between turns should be whether or not its plugged in. to have a power savings feature activate via Siri vs manually opening regardless of charging status makes no sense.

yeah I guess it'll have to be a workaround for the time being. however its unideal for my usage because my car is parked in an underground garage with no reception. so I can't start navigation until I start driving, so handsfree would be a much safer option.

Stays on for me. However if I get a call and switch back after the call I notice the screen will shut down.
