I've been researching this idea I have for weeks now and just can't find the answer I'm looking for.

So here's what I'm doing, I don't want to buy a new Apple CarPlay enabled radio for my car at $500+. But I do want a way to screen mirror Waze to a larger screen. I also have an iPad mini which I don't use much. I have found many ways to mirror the iPhone to the Ipad via numerous apps, but ALL apps require they be on a WiFi connection -- this obviously won't work in my car.

So is there any way to screen mirror the iPhone to the iPad via Bluetooth or even a wired solution? Id prefer a wireless one since I do use the iPhone to play music via the port to the current radio, but ill deal with that later if need be.

Or maybe even create some sort of “hotspot” in the car which both devices could connect to via ApowerMirror. As far as I know it doesn’t need an actual internet connection to work, they just have to be on the same “network”. Am I correct with that? It’s a bit extreme of a solution for such a basic function, but maybe buy a $20 router and just have it in the car? Would that even work?

Thanks

The simple answer is no.

The thing is I’ve seen it done, in person. So there was no online explainatoon of how he did it. He had his iPhone 8 screen mirroring to his iPad Pro in his truck. He was running the ApowerMirror app on both (I did catch that).

My only conclusion is it’s done via a WLAN network on a travel router in the car (which makes sense). Both the phone and iPad connect to the travel router and the app treats it as an WiFi to send the data.

Why wouldn’t that work? I don’t see any reason the mirroring app would require an internet connection.

Firstly you need to figure out how the 3rd party mirroring application works. Does it transmit data over the internet or through a local connection. Other then that there is no supported way to use bluetooth or a wired connection for screen sharing unless another 3rd-party app can do that. If you're having trouble using the 3rd party app or need assistance setting it up it would be wise to contact their support.

Theoretically if the app requires an internet connection, you would need a wireless modem that can connect to a network so that the 3rd party mirroring app can work. Thats only if the app requires so.

That’s what I’m going to test tomorrow. I’m going to disconnect my modem from my home router and leave the phone and pad connected to the router. I’ll see them if it requires an internet connection to work. But I would be surprised if it did. There’s no way it’s streaming my phone screen to a server then back to my iPad. If it is that’s not very efficient

Although that sounds like a solution but for the use case of navigation, the lag will create issues. Probably not in the US due to long straight roads but certainly not possible in the uk cities.

Now that im putting more thought into this very simplistic thing im trying to achieve here, it probably just makes more sense to grab a bluetooth GPS receiver and connect the ipad mini to that while connecting to my phones personal hotspot for live maps and traffic. lol

If the waze app is running on the iPad it requires a GPS receiver, which the iPad mini I own doesn’t have built in. But that’s why I realized above in a previous reply, it’s probably a hell of a lot easier to just buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver and connect to my iPhone hotspot for data. I seriously over complicated what I was trying to do.
