I have the biggest and baddest iMac from this summer and recently the screen has stopped turning off after three minutes. I haven't been able to figure out if a specific program or app was causing it. Restarting fixes the problem only temporarily; at some point the screen will just stay on unless I lock it. When I lock the screen, it'll shut down after a few seconds, as it's supposed to, I guess. It's a decent enough temporary fix, but I'd love it if my beloved Mac and I could just go back to the good ol' days when it did what it was supposed to ;)

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I've uploaded a picture of what my power settings look like. It's in Danish, but the radio buttons are all in the same place anyway ;)

Set up a "hot corner" for display sleep (screen save preference pane).
Does the display go to sleep now?

I tried the SMC thing earlier, but in hindsight I probably pulled the power cord too early and thus it wasn't actually done. It works right know; we'll see if it holds up.

Aaaand it's already stopped working again...

I'll try some other things later. Thanks for all the replies.

Fully updated, of course :)

Turning off the first option seems counter-productive to what I'm trying to achieve. I might as well put it on sleep when I leave it ;)

did you try a NVRAM reset as well?
otherwise give the onyx app a try and run the maintenance tools.
