Screen Problems with Windows XP

I followed all of the instructions for creating a partition, installing windows etc. to the letter.

Then I inserted the CD to install the Apple Drivers, they all installed ok...

But after I restarted the computer, I made it to the windows desktop, before the screen switched off, like it was asleep, although I know it wasn't because I could hear the bubbles popping up to tell me I didn't have anti-virus software, so I know the computer was running, just somehow the screen decided to turn off.


In addition, there is something on the desktop, telling me that the option to run the screen through a TV is enabled, and go here to turn it off, but I can't get there before the screen goes black.

I have re-installed it again, as I say it only seems to be a problem after I install the Apple drivers, has anyone else had a similar problem?

This is on a MacBook Pro 17", I tried reinstalling windows, but the screen went black before I could even install the Apple Drivers this time.

Did you restart using a dialog box? In that case it might help to turn your computer off by pressing the powerbutton for some time while the screen "hangs". Windows sometimes doesn't restart properly after installing certain software. I don't know what the exact problem is, but Windows misbehaves this way on regular PC's too. Turning on and off instead of restarting often helps in those cases.

I just tried running the same copy of XP through Paralels, and it works fine. I think it is something to do with the Bootcamp drivers for the 17" MacBook Pro screen.

Boot Camp is in beta stadium of course. It's just a pity it doesn't work to well on your MBP. Nevertheless it runs fine on my Macbook.

This might be an obsolete question, but did you use the last update of Boot Camp (beta 1.0.2)?

I experienced something similar with mine, though not during the installation of the drivers. Mine had problems while using an external display. The internal display would turn off in win xp, leaving the external 2ndary desktop there but with no taskbar whatsoever and I had to fiddle with the monitor settings in the display preferences to get both running together. Before I did that, whenever i got into windows without the external display hooked up, the signal was still diverted to the DVI port and the internal screen showed nothing but you could clearly hear windows booting up and all the usual pop up sounds. I don't know if any of this helped, but I just thought I'd share it.

Yes it is the newest version of Boot Camp.

neonfever that sounds exactly like the problem I am having, I can hear windows booting up too, I think that if I can borrow an external monitor then I may be able to get it working properly, thank you for the clarification, this was guna be my next step anyway

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode?

Sounds like the trouble is the ATI driver not figuring out where the video should go. You might be able to boot in safe mode, which'll use SVGA drivers and "fix" the ATI driver settings (to turn off TV Output) from that...

No probs. Glad it helped. balamw has a good point. If you don't have or can't get your hands on an external display, safe mode might just be the way.

I had this problem as well.....the exact same issue. Our company IT guy (the only reason I am using XP) simply searched the internet (I think he got it directly from RTI website) for a more appropriate driver (strange that Apple hasnt sorted this already with Boot Camp). The problem had to do with the MBP 17" screen's resolution being too high, yada, yada, yada...at any rate, the problem seems to be fixed...i have been using XP without any major issues the past few days.
