My wife got an X, and I got an 8 Plus.

She needs a case and screen protector. Advice?

I have the Otterbox Commuter on my 8+ that was on my 7+. I would like suggestions for a screen protector.

Thanks!

As a starting point, do you prefer the thicker edge feel of a glass protector which would perhaps provide more protection, or the thinner edge feel of a film protector which may not provide equivalent shielding from more severe drops?

Myself, I've gotten by with a film type for years, as I don't drop my phone often (or at all, iirc). The iPhone X gestures from the edge of the screen also made me stick with the thinner film type, as sliding my finger over a thicker glass protector edge would get annoying for me.

Ok yeah, you can get '2D / 3D' glass protectors that curve at the edges, which may be the best of both worlds, but they're stilk going to be thick, which means if you want an accompanying case with a front lip, the lip would need to be thicker to cover the glass protector, which then means you're going to be holding a thicker case.

I'm all about minimalist, thin shields on my phone, for both the screen protector & case.

I've actually just applied a http://www.bestskinsever.com/iphone-x-skins screen now, after picking up my X today. :D

Thanks for the info!

Do you guys think the Otterbox Commuter provides enough protection for no screen protector? It's raised a little bit so hopefully the screen wouldn't hit if it fell.

I haven't used a screen protector enough to favor one way or the other. I just had a cheap film kind recently after dropping an 7+, which is part of the reason I got a new phone. I'm usually very careful, but in that case, it slid out of my sweat pants pocket and onto the ground. Just never know!

I personally wouldn’t risk it and think they’re overrated myself.

I would go with EvolutiveLabs’s PlayProof combined with their screen protector.

For a more minimalist choice, go with ThanoTech’s case/protector combo.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was just trying to save some money and keep my Commuter from my 7+. It fits fine, but it was time for a new screen protector.

I'll have to check out your suggestions though..thanks!

Edit" I didn't see a ThanoTech case/protector combo. I just saw the separate pieces.

If you JUST need a screen protector, it’s hard to go wrong with amFilm by TechMatte.

Weird touch responses bug me. I just want something that's protective, but at the same time feels just like there's nothing on it.

I'm also horrible at installing these things. My wife is good at it though! I was doing some quick research, and it seems some people just bought the Zagg glass one (not sure which type exactly) from Apple for $35. Seems high, but how long do they last? I wouldn't mind spending that if it lasted a long time and protected well.
