I have hit this problem a few times ... in the past, it only gets solved when there's a system update.

I am trying to do a screen recording, either using a third party application (in this case, I have tried DEBUT) or apple's QUICKTIME.

But neither can do the recording - it is not allowed in the system preferences. (I thought for sure QUICKTIME would be allowed!)

and there does NOT seem to be any way to add the app into the list of apps that are allowed, even when I click the lock (and enter my password) to make changes.

any suggestions? I'd be happy to use either quick time or a third party program to do this.

Try using shift-key command-key 5-key combo.

If that does not work try creating a new user account and see if you have an issue doing a screen recording from the new user account.

When you launch QuickTime and start a new screen recording, it doesn't ask you to allow for the Screen Recording privacy setting?

Yes! It does. But then when I get there, there is NO way to add QUICKTIME to the list of app's that have permission. Unless you know of one.

This is what I get. as you can see, there's no " + " option that would allow me to add another app to the list.

Unless you know something I do not - highly likely!

I believe that works, but the SHIFT-COMMAND-5 recording option does NOT include audio, correct?

thanks for your input!

That’s very odd. I don’t know if you may want to reinstall your OS in case there are permission issues.

As for the Shift+Command+5 suggestion above, you can record audio as well. It’s default to None audio so you have to go into Options to change it.

It seems like you have some issues related to either the install of the OS or possibly your user account. Maybe try downloading the full Catalina installer from the Mac App Store and install it on top of your current system. Try creating a new user account to see if screen recording works in the new user account. Also, maybe try a PRAM reset to see that helps.

argh! I struck out again.

When I hit SHIFT-COMMAND-5 and go for the "options," there is NO Microphone / audio input option.

any idea why that would be? Help! I'm sorry that everything seems to be stacked against me here!

son of a gun!

I do have a second account just for test cases like this one... and YES it IS possible to enable QUICKTIME to do screen recording in the second account. (see PNG file attached.)

so I should try to zap the PRAM? there is no downside to that, right? there's no way it could hurt anything in my system, right?

When I test QuickTime Player to do a screen recording, my System Preferences->Privacy->Screen Recording never adds QuickTime Player to it. PRAM should not cause any issue, at least that is my experience. Maybe take a look at what you are running from your user account startup items. Maybe some third party software is contributing to the issue.
