What you are describing is called "activation lock". Apple or Apple authorized service providers require "activation lock" to be disabled before they will repair the device... at least that has been my experience.

How can I turn it off? I really don’t want to lose the material on the phone by connecting it to Itunes. Apple support chat had no idea on what to do next

You're stuck - you need to erase the phone when you see that screen.

Does this happen alot?
I've never had my screen replaced but I've smashed it for the first time in 20+ years of having an iPhone and it says its going to cost £159 at Apple for a new one!!o_O
I've looked around locally and can get it done for £40 but now I've read this
