Screen Resolution and Windowed Gaming

Lets say I'm playing WoW or Diablo and I'm playing in a windowed mode. If my external monitor is set to a resolution of 1440x900 and I change that windowed game to say 1280x800, is that windowed game actually out putting at 1280x800 or is still 1440x900 cause it's windowed on the desktop?

Just curious, cause I can't notice a difference.

if you have a game set to a window thats 1280x800, then the window game area should measure 1280x800 and it will have nothing to do with your screens resolution at all.
