I recently heard that it is not necessary to have a screen saver for an LCD screen b/c images cannot be burned onto them, and it would be just better to set the screen to go off as to not use up the backlight. Is this true?!

Well, technically LCD screens can still get burn in. You may start to see burn in from the menu-bar icons (or the start menu in Windows), but it isn't such a huge problem and typically isn't permanent. I still use a screen saver because I think they're pretty, but it probably isn't necessary because I play full screen videos all the time.

Turning off the backlight is probably just as good an idea as a screensaver, but either is a fine option.

Uhm, no. It can be 'burned' onto them, kind of, if you keep them there long enough. (I've tried ;))

But just turning it off the screen is fine. A screensaver is only neccessary if you don't turn the screen off.

Turning the screen off is the best option, because backlights always wear out eventually, and LCDs can experience image burn. To quote the first page of my Samsung LT-P1545 LCD TV (and iBook monitor) manual, "Do not leave the screen in pause mode for extended periods of time as you may experience temporary or permanent image burn."

Screen Savers (To me at least) are more about privacy than protecting the screen.

LCD so get "burn" in, but it goes away if you turn off the screen for a while (2-3x the amount of time it was on)
