Hey folks,
I've had my ipad for 16 days now and I love it. However, I was getting quite fed up with the amount of dropped wifi connections as I was trying to browse last night, a problem that has plagued my machine since I got it. This morning, I got up, cleaned my screen and discovered a scratch on the screen. I am always VERY careful with my technology and have no idea how this could have possibly got there.

Now...will they cover this on warranty at all? Anyone have experience with this yet?

Thanks on advance for your help. :apple:

Only really one way to find out.

I think you have a chance.

The scratch is not covered under warranty. The dropped wifi connections is but one would question if you've had your wifi iPad for 16 days and the wifi has dropped since day one why would you suddenly decide this is bad once your iPad was scratched?

Either way, take it to Apple and see if they'll replace it. It's likely they will.

Get an appt. w/ a Genius to discuss the WiFi issue. More than likely they will just give you another one b/c the WiFi issue is confirmed. Don't bring up the scratch -- its not covered so no point in mentioning.

Thanks for the help. I'll call them today.

I'm sure lots of people are sitting at home with dropped wifi and not calling it in. I've just hoped the next OS would help address the issues. Plus, I'm upgrading to 3G once they arrive here in Canada. The scratch is puzzling, though.

Will update after I call Apple.

The scratch is puzzling

Is it a deep scratch (meaning you can feel your fingernail catch on it) or is the screen still smooth? I am thinking of a screen protector because of the glare and fingerprints, but scratch protection is an added bonus.

I see my wifi icon disappear and reappear frequently. However, even watching netflix I don't seem to drop the connection. What I meant was it didn't bother you until there was something cosmetically wrong with the iPad. It is suspect but since the wifi issue is in fact an issue, I'd say they'd replace it because it's not like you dropped it.

It's a deep scrach...I can feel it with my finger tip. I expect someone came in the night just to scratch my screen :D. A mystery for sure.

Well, that's not true at all. Its bothered me since I got my iPad. However, like I said, I figured it would be worked on by Apple and easily fixed with the next OS.

My wifi drops and I have to reconnect each time, not simply wait for the signal to reconnect on its own.

I live in Canada and cant simply walk back into my Apple store for something host I thought was going to be fixed wi an update. I just figured if the scratch was covered, I'd have them take care of both issues.

Like the other poster said, best to return it for the WiFi problem and let the scratch go.

This WiFi problem is really a puzzle as both my WiFi and 3G have had excellent WiFi performance every where I go. It has got to be a hardware thing I would think!

Is the wi-fi dropping in the middle of use, or is it not reconnecting after waking from sleep?

If it's not reconnecting automatically after coming out of sleep, check to see if you have the screen brightness all the way to the minimum.

If you do, slightly increase the brightness. I know it sounds absurd, but my iPad (64GB 3G) instantly regains wi-fi connection when I do that. Many others do as well, as reported all over the web. (google "ipad wifi brightness")

For some reason, Apple hasn't yet acknowledged this bizarre bug. They were blaming it on "some" third party dual-band routers. Sorry Apple, I'm using your very own Airport "Extreme" base station!

Anyway, check the brightness setting if wifi is dropped after sleeping.

Thats interesting how it got there. My five year old son has been using my wifes iPad for about two weeks and no scratches.

They will exchange it for wifi issues. And I am begining to think that it is a hardware issue and not just an OS update. Why? Because I was having similar problems with mine and finally went in and got it exchanged out. Since then, no weak signal and no drops. Same router and settings. So go figure.

Yeah...you're right. I just called Apple and he told me to try a full restore - if that doesn't work, I have to travel back down to Syracuse for an exchange.

My problem is that there will probably not be any in stock when I get there (yes, will phone ahead). I asked if they could upgrade to a 3G, and he told me that it won't work in Canada because "it's an AT&T Ipad". Strange again. From what I've read, they are unlocked.

Anyhow, next step is to see if I can restore and if it fails, head back down to US.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Let us know hoe it goes. Do they run tests on the iPad before giving you a new one?

check your cloth that you used to clean the screen with. could there be a small pc of something that caused it when you wiped the screen?

Its so easy to bump it, or have it brush up against something, in a bag, case etc.

They have issued a replacement request. I just have to get back down to Syracuse to return. They just did some things on the telephone. And, as I've typed this, wifi has dropped twice.

He told me they are trying to round up all models that are getting wifi dropping in a timely manner. And he told me there are many out there with no problems, they just can't explain the dropping.

I'll update when I make the switch!
