Screen shots lost?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or what.. But my screen shots seem to not be saved to my Desktop. I'm not sure where they go. Ive been using Shift, control, Command, 4.
It sounds like a picture has been taken and then I can't find it.....
Can someone help?

Seems like something basic, but I'm not sure what to teach for other than "screen shot"

The Shift-Control-Command-4 shortcut copies the screenshot to the clipboard. Use Shift-Command-4 to copy it to the desktop.

Press shift+cmd+5. A floating panel will appear in the lower right corner of your screen. Click Options and select Desktop. Either complete your selection and click Capture, or press the escape key to terminate this panel. Subsequent use of shift+cmd+4 or shift+cmd+5 captures will go to your Desktop.
