Mac OS 10.3 and up save screenshots as .png by default. You could take a screenshot to the clipboard as well.

command-ctrl-shift-3 : full screen
command-ctrl-shift-4: crosshair selector (while you have the crosshair, push space to get the "camera"; this will take pictures of windows, palettes, whatever you point it at)

Once you capture what you need, switch to Photoshop and paste.

When I open a screenshot I've saved, it automatically opens as .png (in Preview). But regardless, you can save the screenshot as a different format. Just choose your format from the "Save as" menu in Preview.

Picture 5.png

Does that answer your question? Or is there something else that I'm not understanding?

I believe 10.3 saved as PDF. It wasn't until 10.4 that they changed the format to PNG.

If Preview has the same possibility to choose "Save as" format, then it shouldn't matter that the OP has 10.2 - she/he can still choose the format she/he wants from the save-menu.

Absolutely, it's quite handy that Preview can change formats.

Here's an easy way:

Download TinkerTool.

Install TinkerTool.

Open TinkerTool. Go to the "General Pane." There is a section that says Screentshot file format. Choose PDF.

You're done!

EDIT: My advice was completely useless to you. I quickly misread your post. I assumed you were in Tiger and wanted to save to PDF. Sorry.

That doesn't work on Jaguar or Panther AFAIK.

There is a solution for Panther, but I don't know if it works on Jaguar or not. Open Terminal and type the following:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png

Or substitute "jpeg" or "gif" for "png" if you prefer a different format, or use "pdf" to change things back.

Or use ChangeCapture. Doesn't get much easier than that.
