I'm trying to configure my daughters MacBook Air so that she can only open specific websites. In screen time I can an add websites to the list of allowed sites, but as soon as I reopen the dialog the list is reset to the defaults. Earlier her account was restricted to only the default list of sites despite my attempts to add additional sites. Right now it appears that her web access is unlimited even though "Allowed Websites Only" is still selected for her apple ID.
Details:
At this point I'm pretty frustrated. I'm hoping that there's some non-obvious-to-me step I missed or there's system file I need to delete or change preferences on or something. But it sure feels like a straight up bug at this point. I will appreciate any suggestions you have or confirmation that this behavior isn't limited to just our accounts.
Thank you,
Scott
Details:
- OS = 11.2. I had the same problems before this latest update which I had hoped would resolve this.
- On my daughter's laptop:
- System Preferences/Family Sharing --> created a profile for my daughter
- System Preferences/Users & Groups --> created a standard user ID for her and logged it into the family sharing account for her
- System Preferences/Screen Time/Content & Privacy
- Content & Privacy Restrictions = On
- Web Content = Allowed Websites Only
- Still under Content and Privacy I clicked the Customize... dialog button and added websites to the list of allowed sites. Then I clicked done.
- Click the Customize... dialog again, and the list of sites has reverted to the defaults.
- Confirmed that in fact she could not open the sites I had added.
- Tried various combinations of making the changes from her user ID on her laptop, my user ID, logging her out before I attempted to make changes, etc.
- Switched to my laptop, also running MacOs 11.2:
- repeated steps 2.4 and 2.5. This time the changes stuck and I could see them on when I reopened the list of allowed sites.
- Closed system preferences.
- Confirmed that she could open one of the websites on her laptop.
- Repeated step 5 to add another website -- and now the list has again reverted to the defaults. Confirmed that now whenever I add a site it disappears as soon as I reopen the dialog.
- Checked my daughters computer and she can actually open websites I never added to the list. I presume this was probably true at step 3.3 but I didn't specifically check that then.
- Confirmed that on her screen time settings the radio button for "alllowed websites only" is still checked and "unrestricted access" is not.
