I have a new ipad mini for myself and my son to use. I'm looking at screen time, and I can see there are downtime, app limits, always allowed and content & privacy restriction options.

I've added my son in as a family member and when clicking his name, I see those same options again on another page. I've just made the changes in there, but I'm wondering how does the ipad know whos using it?

The changes I made in my sons area for downtime doesn't seem to be having any effect. Do I need to replicate the same changes on the main area for screen time too? (that will affect my usage so what would be the point of family member part)

It depends on which iCloud account the device is associated with. If it’s yours, your screen time restrictions apply, if it’s your son’s, his screen time restrictions apply. There is no easy way to switch iCloud accounts. Basically, iPads are single person devices. It cannot be shared between multiple people with a different account for each person.

So, the only way is for your son and you to share screen time restrictions.

I’ll test out downtime.
