So I jumped from a 2G iPhone to a 3GS on release day. I used the old phone occasionally for the iPod but mostly listened to Pandora.

Today is the first day I am using the iPod feature on the 3GS and noticed something weird. I have my auto screen lock set at 1 Minute, but the screen never officially locks as long as I have the iPod program up.

After about a minute or so, it goes into the very dim power-saving mode and then just sits there. When the song changes over, the screen goes to the normal in-use brightness. Even on very long songs it will sit on the dim screen and never actually lock.

This is not something I ever remember experiencing on my 2G iPhone, and I could not find any clear options regarding this in either the auto-lock or iPod setting menus.

Is this standard behavior now?

EDIT: The same behavior is happening while playing the iPod and looking at my SMS messages. The screen will never lock and will go back to normal brightness when the song changes in the background.

Have you enabled a Passcode? If not, try setting that as well. Also if it is set or when you set, change the Require Passcode option to Immediately or 1min to see if that helps. :)

I already had a passcode enabled and set to require it Immediately. I played with the settings for a few minutes then reverted them back to 1 Min Auto-lock, Enabled Passcode and Immediately and it's still there.

I wouldn't mind if this only affected the iPod, but I don't like it when it's affecting everything as long as the iPod is running in the background.

Crap, I thought that might work. I suspect this may be why I started to lock my iPhone before putting in my pocket and it's become a habit.

It should however lock as you wish it did. :/

Upon further examination with co-workers, this only happens when I have my phone plugged in to a PC using a sync cable. The PC does not have iTunes on it.
