I have a 15" Powerbook, and the screen is grainy. Also a 17" C2D which I just got, and the screen is perfect -- no grain whatsoever. One thing I notice is that the viewing angle on these screens is not as wide as one would like -- when you're right in front of the 17" screen, the corners are a bit dim because of the viewing angle. This happens on the 15" also, but it's less noticeable. In thinking this over, it seems to me that this has to do with the nature of portable screens, which cannot draw as much power as a screen you plug in. In order to maximize the brightness, the angle of vision is narrower in these screens. Given that, I am quite happy with my 17" -- it's quite bright, and one gets used to the restricted viewing angle.

17" C2D MBP - the display definitely has a narrower angle of view than my 17" PBG4. Getting used to it, though. I believe it's due to the higher DPI. Sorta reminds me of a projection TV, where it sortof "follows" you as you move your head parallel to screen. Very slight effect, though [compared to TV].
Illumination wise, it's about a toss-up to the PBG4. Lighter area along the bottom, but typical for notebook displays.

Ok tell me this:
My C2D MBP screen has a slim viewing angle, like all of them.
But for some reason if you look at the screen from an angle to the right, it looks brighter, and if you look at it from an angle to the left, it looks darker. If anybody else notices this, please say so.

I can't really measure it with my naked eye, but I can tell my right side is slightly dimmer than the left

Yes I agree with my new 15" MBP C2D that a right angle the screen looks bright and even, yet from that same angle on the left, it looks more dim.
It could be an effect from this glossy screen coating, maybe why there's less glare but so great vivid performance.
Anyhow, this entire machine is so freakin awesome and snappy™, I'm more than willing to enjoy it the way it is! I mean, the screen is so bright I often turn it way down -- the same with my desktop Dell screen but this is a laptop! At a coffee shop tonight, I had to turn down the screen 'cause everyone was looking over at this blazing beauty.

The funny thing is I have a matte screen. So I guess this means it affects both of them. I can't say I'm surprised though, my camera LCD does the same thing (its as if it was made to only be viewed by the perfect middle). But they should fix thix. I almost wish I got a glossy screen just for the vididness of the colour lol
