My iMac G5 was using the iTunes Artwork screensaver happily until some point in time (I can't remember when or how) wher it now flickers the screen from fade-to-black to return-to-desktop. When I go into Desktop and Scrensaver in my System Preferences to change it, the System Preferences app quits unexpectedly. I open a terminal session and drill down to the executable within the iTunes Artwork and attempt to launch it by entering

$ ./iTunes\ Artwork

and it returns with "Bad executable". How do I fix this, or else how do I return to the factory setting screensaver?

Thanks in advance

Try deleting your System Preferences Preference in YOUR library folder. You may have to re-do all of your settings in the system preferences, but that should reset some things.

OR

Try launching the desktop/screen savers system pref WITHOUT going to System Preferences first. To do that do the following:

1. Open up your HD

2. Double click on System

3. Double click on Library

4. Double click on Preference Panes

5. Double click on Desktop/Screen Effects preference pane

OR

Do it under a different User

Just some things to try....

Try visiting electricsheep.org and downloading their free screensaver. You'll wonder why you ever used anything else.

EDIT: I'm serious.

I downloaded it but I STILL can't choose anything inthe screen saver Preference Pane without the application exiting.

I figured out how to log in as Root, and when I did I ddeleted the iTunes Artwork directory. When I logged back as myself, I got back the Screen Saver panel, but I am only able to select the Comupter Name screensaver. No other ones work, includng the new ones I downloaded.

If you go to:

yourhd/system/library/Screen savers

Are there any screen savers in there? If not then I can send you the ones that are supposed to be in there. You may be able to extract them from the OS X installer DVD.

Also, you may want reinstall the Desktop & Screensavers preference pane. Maybe something screwed it up. I can even send you the Desktop & screensavers preference pane that I have as long as you have Mac OS X.4 (Tiger) Installed.

I have screen savers in this directory already. They just kill the app when I try to access it. Can I just take the Install Disk thnat came with my iMac and just install the piece that I need?

If you can find them on the installer CD/DVD, go ahead. Good luck with it though as the files on the installer disc are hidden. There are programs what will view hidden files in OS X. Just do a search on http://www.versiontracker.com

If its that much of an issue for you, you may want to consider doing an archive and install of OS X. That will just rewrite the OS X system folder and will NOT delete your apps, or home folders.
