Is there a decent screenshot app out there for Mac OS 26?

Not digging CMD+SHIFT+5 as it appears to take a screenshot of the entire app window which I don't always want.

I don't use it, but Apple has a screenshot app. Tahoe installed it in my Utilities folder:

I Have a Logitech keyboard with Special assignment "G" keys. I assigned one of my G keys to CMD+Shift+4, so I press the key and voila.

CMD+SHIFT+5

I'm still on Sequoia, and this pops the screenie app

I have two screens, and (with CMD+SHIFT+5) the screenie app floats a mini-dialog at the bottom of the second screen. It also allows multiple capture modalities.

CMD+SHIFT+4 lets me click-drag-release to select a particular area for my screen-shots. Efficient, yet I like having choices become available.

15.7 here, I open Preview, then through menu go to > file > take screenshot > as appropriate, as long as what needs capturing is in the foreground.

The best screenshot tool (on either Mac or Windows - and works on both) is Techsmith SnagIT. There isn't even a close second.

Look at the toolbar that appears at the bottom when you hit Cmd+Shift+5. You can select between full screen, a specific window, or a specific area of the screen (drag a box).

(At least that is how it works in Sequoia, I hope that they haven't messed this up in Tahoe...)

Does it? To me it shows a rectangle which I can move and resize, before capturing the portion of the desktop which I want.

You can also choose to record a video.

Honestly, I don't know why would anybody need a 3rd party app.

I can't speak for others, but I can think of quite a few reasons why I pay for a 3rd party tool (in my case, SnagIT). They all basically come down to increased productivity. Just off the top of my head:

1) I'm able to inite a screen cap, mark it up (sometimes extensively), and paste the marked-up pic onto whatever document or e-mail I'm working much more quickly than with any other tool I've ever used, either free or paid-for. It is also very, very easy to mark up a screen shot in a very clean, professional manner.

2) I don't need to remember any weird keyboard combinations. Whether I want a static screen shot or a recording, and whether I want the whole screen, a selectable section, or a window or a section of a window, the whole process is initiated by the same keypress (PrtScr in Windows, Ctrl-Shift-C on Mac).

4) I can screen shot the entire contents of a scrolling window.

5) Text that is captured as part of the screen shot can be extracted to plain text.

6) I can do annotated "Step" captures for capturing and documenting a series of steps as part of a process without interrupting my flow as I walk through the process.

I do screencaps dozens of times a day, usually for providing either technical details or testing results to co-workers or documentation to clients. The time I save in a year using the paid app over any other app I've ever tried (free or otherwise) can be measured in hours.

Got it.

(even though 2) and 5) can be done with the Mac OS tool. I would say the same for 1), but honestly I use it so rarely)

Have you tried CMD+Shift+4? Lets you do a screenshot of a specific area.
That’s what I always do. And there’s no need for a UI to select different screenshot methods, unlike the shift command 5.

Shift command 4, you can even use the option key to hold and change the rectangular view. Or, you can press the space bar to change to capture a window.

SnagIt used to be a tool I'd recommend (especially on Windows—not so much on Mac).

Not a fan of their prices and yearly subscription scheme, though. I fail to see the benefit of shelling out money to a developer on a regular basis for a screenshot app. I might feel differently if I used it every day for work or other purposes, but certainly not for the occasional use.
