Screw June, Screw WWDC! I Finally made the leap!

After months of lurking these forums, bidding my time till June when they release Leopard and Santa Rosa, I decided the hell with it and finally made the leap into the world of Macs! :cool:

When I heard they're pushing back Leopard till October, my only reason left to wait till June was the hope of Santa Rosa and an updated MBP line. But then I thought about it and figured that it makes no sense to wait till June if you don't know exactly what you're waiting for. You know that they're probably gonna come out with a better Mac lineup, probably a little faster, a little better, but you don't know if that alone is worth the wait. If you take Leopard out of the equation, then you're only betting on the chance that the new Macs are worth the time you spent NOT having a Mac.

I figured, since I've never owned a Mac before, will I really notice the difference of a new and improved Santa Rosa MBP vs last year's MBP? Ignorance is bliss right? Anyway I can always get Leopard when it comes out. By 6 months... the large hole in my pocket might be healed enough to shell out another 129...

Anyway I'm very happy with my new week-old 15'' 2.33Ghz MBP. Now I can finally use my FCP 5.1 that I purchased through that crossgrade offer (thanks Multimedia)

For those of you PC users holding out till June to switch and praying for updated Macs, making the leap right now was really not that bad. If you've never had a Mac before, you'll never know the difference! :) Plus you'll never have those "should I buy it now?" obsessive thoughts ever again and you can finally stop patrolling mac rumor sites every day. The peace of mind, alone, is worth it.
 
I found the 1st one is always the impulse buy. Now that you.ve got one you can afford to wait the next time you upgrade in a few years from now.

I just bought a MBP at xmas time, so I'm thinking my next laptop upgrade will be around 2010. That'll be cool, Summer Olympics in my home town and new lap top.

My first Mac was totally an impulse buy. I worked at a campus computer stoer at a university, and a faculty member had ordered a 17" PowerBook with 1GB of RAM. Since it was a custom order, they took a $400 deposit on it. The faculty member decided he didn't want it, but it had already arrived. So, i had a $400 discount on this sweet computer. The store took off an extra ~$250 for me, with a total discount of about $650. How could I say no?

Cost me $2600 after tax. It's the biggest impulse purchase I've ever made, and I don't regret it for a second.

PS: The guys at the store tried to talk me out of it to wait for the 17" MBP. It wasn't to be released for another 6 or so months, and I knew I wouldn't be getting that kinda deal again, so I just made the jump. I definitely don't regret it, although the built-in iSight would be sweet, along with the huge increase in performance, but for what I do, I don't really need that much power. And if I do, I can always leave it going over night (encoding/decoding video, etc)
 
superspiffy - I'm right there with you! I made the jump today to a 2.16 MBP! This is my first Mac and I am so excited. Other than a scare with my iSight not working, this thing has been awesome for the last hour I have had it powered on! :D <--- a smile only $ could buy!
 
I'm with you too spiffy! I bought a 17" MacBook Pro 2.33 just the other day. This isn't my first mac purchase, but I didn't want to wait. It is however my first laptop purchase.

Haha congrates on the new Mac! I've also just made that decision and got it last week, but it came w/ two dead pixels so my MBP will be on its way back to apple and a new one would be arriving at my place soon after that! Other than the dead pixels I love it so far! Really do! It's a great machine!

Ditto!! well....macbook instead of macbook pro but everything else the same. I have been waiting since the end of last year for my first mac and decided I will always be waiting for something that bit better so ordered last wednesday. Also, I'm buying through my college and we finish there in a few weeks so can't afford to wait until wwdc for changes.
 
Wow, this is actually exactly the same thing I did on Friday. I figured since this was my first Mac it wasn't going to make much difference. Since my PC has been super-outdated for at least three years, having a slightly outdated Mac was not going to be much of a sore spot for me.

So I went and got myself a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook. I love it and am excited to finally be a part of the Mac community after a few months of lurking forums and checking up on rumor sites and blogs three times a day for any peep about the potential new laptops. I'm glad I decided to go for it.
 
I miss the box openning of a new Mac I buy.. Although I work at an Apple Store and we do it twice a day, something inside knows that they are not mine and it doesnt give that much of a joy..

Use your MBP in happy days my friend, and welcome..

I am happy for the OP and the good choice he made, plus it is refreshing to learn of somebody making a decision in the face of potential changes arriving fairly soon. However, BV is right in that a new purchase has little, if any, impact on how regularly most members check sites such as this. I have not encountered a forum as resourceful and well run as this.

I'm about to make the switch. I just need my one credit card application to come back, once (and I hope it happens soon) I'm verified, I plan to go out to Best Buy and pick up a MBP. I've been wanted to make the switch for years now, I've only used PC's and I'm tired of them. I've used macs in some of my classes - for video editing, audio editing, and I love everything about them. Hopefully I'll pick one up in the upcoming week. I can't wait. And congrats on just going for it.
 
Waiting for hardware changes that give 5-10% improvement is silly anyway. Software alogorithms are the biggest determinant of app speed. Program something one way and it takes 10 minutes, program it another way and it takes half a second.

That's why Leopard is far more exciting than Santa Rosa or Stoakley-Seaburg, and you will be able to install Leopard on any Mac you buy today.

Congratulations on your new Mac.

After years, of watching an uncle plug away on original Mac. Then a
G3 Mac Pro, then onto an g4 imac. *with intermittant windows machines
in between*, I ordered my 24" Imac in November through a computer
purchase program at work. With an interest free loan, and payments
removed from my weekly check, I couldn't pass it up. *S*

So I ordered and waited.

I received my Mac, and imediately found out that it had a problem
with spitting out dvd's. *Apparently it shifted during shipping and
wasn't lining up with slot*. I took the computer to the local apple store,
and up to the genius bar, and they replaced it right there, with a brand
new machine, along with the updated warranty information.

Now, I've dealt with computers before, and found that if I had, had
a problem, the stores would not be happy if I brought it back, and
then always tried to charge me, for a new one. *or at least part
of it, as a "restocking fee".

That sold me, even with just turning it on, and finding something wrong,
the store gave me a great feeling. And I'll never return to a pc.

Everything that I have done, worked on, even just wanted to try, has
worked on the MAC. Without worry or even a complaint. Updates have
all gone smoothly. And there are always people out there to help, if you
need it.

Now, I would suggest you find a mac user group in your area. For a few
dollars a year, even if you don't go to the meetings, it's always a good
thing to have someone to contact for questions, without dropping in on
the friendly apple store. And theres always new tricks to find out on the mac
that make life so much easier.

Once more, congrats on the Mac. ..

*now on to the wait for Leopard*

I'd never buy any mac product at bestbuy. I trust apple.com and the apple stores a lot more then the " Geek squad" at best buy:p
