Hey,

So I bought and have been using Scrivener 3 since it released, and I like it. But I'm having trouble with the saving/backups aspects, and I'm hoping someone with more experience can help.

Note: I never used v2 of Scrivener, so this is my first foray into it.

Right now, I have my project set to backup to DropBox. When I try to save it by clicking "backup" it says, "Project is not in a recommended save location."

And then says (project name) "is stored inside its own automatic backups folder. This could potentially result in data loss in the event of an automatic backup trying to overwrite the current project file." This, I believe, is what has happened.

I was writing, and I clicked backup now. I then came back and reopened the project about an hour later, and all of my latest work was gone. It's not a huge deal, as I'm following an outline -- but I don't want this to keep happening.

In my Dropbox, I have multiple zip files of the project -- it's made maybe 10 of them total -- but none of them are current. I'm probably missing something simple, but at this point I just want to know how to correctly save my project each time I finish a writing session.

Should I take it out of DropBox and make the default backup location just to my local SSD on my Mac? Or is there a better (more correct) way to work with DropBox?

Thanks!

In Dropbox you should have the following structure:

Dropbox
-- Apps
---- Scrivener

This is where you save all your scrivener apps. This is the folder iOS scrivener automatically checks and syncs with.

Your backup folder is not your Dropbox folder it's something else. I think this where the confusion may lie. Dropbox is for syncing, back-up should be either your computer, external etc.

Does that help?

That does help, thanks. I have one more question. I connected an external drive and set it as the backup location. However, it still says the same message "Project is not in a recommended save location" and that it's in its own automatic backup folder. Is there a way to stop this? I even tried turning off automatic backups. So far, though, the backup process does work, which is good. I did some brief writing, backed it up to the external, and reopened. It worked properly. Thanks for your help!

Default location for backups is:

/Users/*****/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Backups/

But there is no reason why it cannot be else where.

1. Is your file (as in when you just "save" or "save as") in your dropbox folder?
2. Is your Backup location set to the external HD (in Preferences/Backup/Backup location)?

If both of these are true, I'm not sure wha the issues is.

I think it's working normally now. I've changed my backup location to my external drive, so when I click "save as" to check, it lists the external HD as default, since it's currently plugged in. I've done some writing, backed it up, and ejected the external just to make sure it'd work properly, and it does. Thanks for all of your help.

Thank you OP for creating this thread and thank you @Scott Robinson for the tip! I was getting the same error and looking over the Scrivener forums I wasn't able to find what I was looking for. This is perfect!!!
