I have noticed a strange thing on my base MBA M1.

I work in IT and I'm a geek so like to know what's happening in the background on my computers . So, since I've had my M1, probably 3 weeks now I guess, I've had activity monitor open to see what my energy usage is like and also my memory usage as I guess I was obsessing over 8gb not being enough.

I closed it down today and noticed immediately that the scrolling in safari and I guess general machine snappiness increased a lot. I thought it was a fluke, opened it back up again and it now stutters a bit in safari.

I close it down and its smoother again. Might be me imagining it I guess. But worth checking if you have any issues with scrolling etc, check to see if activity monitor is open :)

I have laggy scrolling on Safari on Youtube on M1 MBP (16GB RAM) and M1 mac mini (8GB RAM). Doesn't happen with Chrome.

Thats good too know. Have you come to terms with 8gb being enough? I was the same but have now accepted 8gb is more than enough. I was planning on returning the 8gb for a 16gb but I've cancelled that order now as 8 is plenty for me

I have always said more ram the better and I still believe that, but for what I use my laptop for 8gb is enough. If 16gb was available at the time when I got it, i'd have bought that. Saying that, I'm so impressed with AS that I will probably upgrade this anyway in a year or 2 depending what Apple release , so can always get more ram then if I get a decent price for this.

The money saving logical part of me though hasn't seen the memory pressure get into the red apart from one when I was setting up and downloading my photos, since then its always been green.

I've read somewhere that the activity monitor is actually using a lot of processor usage... and that is kind of a piece of crap.

quite possibly. I feel out of my depth on Mac. I work in IT so use pcs so I feel more comfortable with them. So I have no idea what isn't very good on Macs :)

The money saving logical part of my brain stepped in when I cancelled my order for the 16gb. I was the same and memory pressure never in red. Im not planning on keeping it long enough to worry about future proofing and will be getting one of the newer, hopefully redesigned AS MacBooks in a couple of years
