SDH subtitles?

In the release notes for the most recent software update for the AppleTV, it says that the AppleTV now supports SDH subtitles. I know that it previously supported playing both closed captions and srt subtitles.

What is SDH and howis it different from the previous 2?

SDH is much better. :D

CC are displayed as white text on a black band, which blocks a large portion of the view. SDH does't have the black band.

How is it different from srt subtitles though?

The one difference dive noticed so far in how subtitles are handled is that set subtitles are no longer displayed in a dark background at the bottom of the screen.

I think CC and SDH only define how subtitles are displayed on screen, it's not an actual text format. The only subtitle format ATV supports is "3GPP Timed Text", I am not sure how different it is from SRT though.

I see. Well, I do prefer the way they are now. I also like how you can toggle closed captions on and off now without having to go to the settings.
 
I'm also wondering the same thing. SDH subtitles are just detailed subtitles for the hard of hearing, and on most Blu-ray releases now are formatted like closed captions, but in PGS format. So now, I'm wondering if Apple introduced a new format for SDH subtitles, where they're text based but keep the way they're displayed on the movie.
 
I went back and checked some films and TV episodes that previously included and displayed the CC with black background. None of these display anything else now after the update, still the same black band and only CC as you would call it. Perhaps this is only working for new and upcoming movies and tv episodes?

CC's are still the same. It's subtitles that changed.
 
How do you play SRT subtitles?
I don't recall the option on iTunes Library to add such a thing or what am I missing?

The video has to have srt subtitles in in the video itself. You can use a program like mp4 tools to mux an srt into a video file. Then while the video is playing hold the select button while watching a video to select the subtitle.
 
learned something new...never knew how to get subtitles on, fairly quickly.

sometimes i watch movies with loud action while my wife is asleep on the couch and this is good to know

Oh ok thanks.
For a moment I got excited but then having to mux or (re)encode something for iTunes is what basically makes the ATV useless for me as I have too much videos and in this case I won't do what Timmy wants me to. (Rant//)

But cool to know there is the potential to now display SDH.

I hear that. I like to have subtitles / captions for all of my video. iTunes adding cc to its tv shows and having them in 1080p is the reason I switched to buying from iTunes from blu rays. I get the files in 1080p with closed captions, and I can download them or stream them from anywhere using iCloud.

I just wish they would go back and add closed captions to shows that we're available before they added cc support. I also wish all of their shows were in 1080p
