SDK: access to microphone, calls?

I'm starting to play with developing with the SDK. Most of what I've read says that the API is limited in that it can not interface with the native iPhone apps.

Is there a way to record sound in a 3rd party app using the microphone, via the SDK? Moreover, is it possible to place calls and control the I/O of the call voice data?

Any guidance appreciated..
