Ok, I am pretty much positive I want this phone, but 2 Questions...

Can the W800 play mp3 files as ringtones?
Can the W800 playback movies encoded in h.264?

I called Sony Ericsson customer support. Awesome service. Just if you were wondering like myself, it will playback mp3's as ringtones. They didn't really answer my question about h.264, they said it plays back in MPEG4 and Mp3g? What is MP3g and has anyone gotten h.264 on one of these phones?

I'm 99% certain that the W800 can only play MPEG4 encoded movies. It's a very nice phone, for sure!

The PSP originally only plaed mpeg4 and now it supports h.264. I gotta cross my fingers. Maybe i could use the same drivers? It couldn't do that much damage to replace video playback drivers.

Try searching/asking on esato.com - it's a forum for SE users where they manage to dig up all sorts of facts/hacks/tips etc for SE phones.
Thanks! After submitting an email to sony ericsson in addition to a phone call, I received a more efficient answer than what the phone represenative gave me. Here's the e-mail:

DearXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

The W800i does support MP3 ringtones.

The phone supports MP3 file extension for MPEG audio layer 3 compressed by a factor of around 12.

Sony Ericsson W800i supports 3GPP format for video and basically this means support for H.263 and MPEG4 as follows:

MPEG-4 Simple Visual Profile Level 0
H.263 Profile 0 Level 10

The frame rate is 15fps maximum as this is the maximum allowed in the specifications. The device is able to play full screen video.

As part of Sony Ericsson's commitment to excellent customer service, we offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our website at http://www.sonyericsson.com or call us at 1-866-766-9374

I recently got an SE K750. Incredible phone. Fantastic camera.

When I plugged it into the USB cable through my PB, iPhoto automatically opened and started importing the photos without me touching a button.

But, when I added some files into the memory card the phone couldn't play/open them. Copying them by Bluetooth works fine though.

All SE phones come with the same software that only runs on PC which is very useful if you want to copy across illegal downloads of games and themes.

i hope you realized that you can't play the files that you transfer via usb to the memory card until the cable is detached.

Hmm...can't remember whether I detached or not. Would have thought I would have though.

Why? Does the phone need exclusive access to the files? I could see the files on the phone just couldn't play them.

where to buy?

Any suggestions on where to get the best deal on either a w800i or the k750? I am currently using cingular and these phones are not offered so would need to buy at non-discounted price. Thanks for any help.

The W800i/K750i works very well with Macs and will play mp3s and .m4as but the latter will usually not be displayed properly.

In order to have mp3s look, be menued and play correctly and transferred via the USB lead, you should place the mp3s in the 'mp3' folder on the phone in the following format:

W800i/MP3/Artist Name/Album Name/song.mp3

If you don't file it this way, you will likely get the message: This file cannot be used, please use the included disc2phone software blah blah blah...

And yes, it will play mp3s as ringtones, you can have your morning alarm as an mp3 and you can have your message alert tone as an mp3.

A great series of phones overall, IMO. :)

Two apps that might be of help when transfering music:

Dreamsicle - For transfering music. iTunes (and iPhoto) support (though no DRM'ed files). Demo available.

K750iGrabber - If you have issues with crashes.

Haven't tried them, so I can't vouch for them, but might be worth a look.

K750i grabber instantly solves the kernal panic problem associated with this series (cheers to Applespider for first pointing that out to me).

Dreamsicle looks very interesting, dubbz. Definitely worth a look. That would make things seriously simple for music transfers.

That's a nice phone for sure.

I'd like a new SE to replace my old Z600 - but I don't need/want a camera, is a clamshell in GSM format, and is nice and thin (Z600 is kinda chubby).

I thought the Z800i might be a nice upgrade but I can't stand the look of it.
