I want Apple to bring the best search engine to the world. I think they should buy Yahoo and build off of that (heck they even have the money to buy Google).

I also want Apple to build the best 4G LTE-A carrier in the US. They could buy AT&T and Verizon.

Lastly, I want Apple to build the best fiberoptic gigabit data/tv network in the US.

I know these are dreams but I know that I would be a customer of all 3 of these services, what do you guys think?

What you describe is already known as "diversification", and to most companies, it has done no good. You can't be excellent in all these trades.

Well maybe the largest most profitable tech company in the work could excel in all 3 of these areas. I think they have the money and knowledge to conquer all of these categories.

But why would Apple get into Telecommunications? They have no technical expertise in this area that indicates that they would be able to competently run a business that is totally different then their own? Telecommunications and ISP’s are totally different business types and are monumentally expensive to operate, not to mention that they come burdened with government attention and regulation. Why would Apple willingly open themselves up to such a thing any more than Samsung or LG would.

Remember if Apple would buy out a mobile carrier, they have to provide service to everybody - thats uncomfortable.

As far as search goes, they would put themselves in direct competition with Google - a company that has massive experience and a target that has way more power in this business. Historically, Apple doesn’t get into business that would put them in direct competition unless they have some major edge - something they would not have. And what would they do about other services that Yahoo has.

Apple has shown no interest in doing any of these things - thats probably because they are terrible ideas.

I think they have the money and knowledge to conquer all of these categories
Maybe enough money for one (and even then I doubt it since these are all expensive businesses), but what proof do you have that they have the knowhow? Apple has been criticized for several of their internet services, and their only knowledge about the telecom side is making phones and tablets that operate on a network. That in no way implies knowledge of operating either of these things.

google fiber gets a lot of hype, but until google commits the tens of billions of $$$ for a national build out, all it is is hype. and the price will go up if they do this. one estimate i read is that it's going to cost $140 billion

ISP/cable biz is a huge low margin, high capital expense, high debt business that google and apple don't want a part in now.

What you want is a monopoly of epic proportions. If you scale it up only very slightly, what you are asking for is the NWO and I can tell you now that many many people will oppose that to their death bed.

Good day, sir.

Yea, bit that’s not enough. You have to be competent in the necessary business (of which there is no evidence that Apple has said competence or desires it). You might have good customer service, but if you can’t run such a company properly, it doesn’t matter.

What makes you think (other than customer service) that Apple has the desire and the skills to operate a search engine, operate a cable company, or a cellular service or an ISP? If you can’t come up with specifics, then what is the point?

Why would Apple want to get in these businesses in the first place?

I guess the question is purely an exercise in "what if". That's valid, although we have to remember what happened when Apple tried to launch online services such as MobileMe, or maintain ones such as .Mac. Favoring lightspeed innovation isn't the issue, cutting support much too early for older systems is, and that is a specific problem when it comes to online services.

Or any service which requires infrastructure that costs a massive amount of money to install and maintain.

Really the only realistic service that the OP specifies that Apple could realistically get into is search engines, but there they face a significant disadvantage trying to directly compete against another company with massive marketshare in a service that they don’t have any specialty in. Honestly, what could they bring to the market that Google already hasn’t and how can it make Apple money (google makes its money with Ads in search, not just search itself). And honestly raw marketshare isn’t Apple’s thing. They proved that when they tried to sell OSX on other companies hardware like MS did - it only hurt Apple.

The rest of the businesses are essentially holes that Apple can throw money down with little chance of making it up and facing tight regulations to get there. Of all these cellular is the worst since they would have to share their infrastructure with competitors. That’s why Samsung, Motorola, LG, MS, and BB do not operate cellular companies.

Id' like to see the math on that.

GOOG Market Cap is $400B.

Apple has about $160B in cash.

-t

First of all market cap isn't end all total valuation of a company. Secondly, Apple would obviously take a loan just like they did for the stock buy back. Lastly, it was just a dream ... I was pointing out that the way Apple conducts business I would support them in these 3 categories.
