Search engine suggestions in Safari

Since iPadOS 17, search engine suggestions in Safari no longer seem to persist. Previously when entering the first few letters of a search, a suggestion would appear for search. But now if wanting to modify that suggestion, it completely disappears requiring re-entering the search criteria again from scratch.

Maybe not a big deal, but it was a time saver when doing searches. I'm on iPadOS 17, but I imagine it's the same on 18. Anyone else run into this? I don't see any setting for Safari to change this.

It's inconsistent when trying recreate it. I'll describe in more detail if it continues. Likely a search parameter setting in Safari or the way I search.
