Sorry, just realized there a comments on the news announcement itself, I should have put this there...

I updated my 3 apple tv's and i can now browse my own movies by genre! I am now glad I made the effort to set appropriate genres, though looking at it now I may to create a couple more (too many stuck in 'Drama').

Other decision now is do I move my kid's movies from a 'Kid's Movies' TV show into the movies section with a 'Childrens' genre?

I just might have to do that.

Update took about 5 minutes.

Would be nice if you could "lock" a certain genre using a 3 digit pin to unlock. Oh and selecting the genre won't show any previews if locked........for certain films....er...adaptations ;)
 
Browsing by genre is a step in the right direction but I hope the next iTunes and Apple TV software update are better suited to movie content. The tags we can use for films now are the same as those for music and they do not seem appropriate. For example who is the artist of a film? Is it the director, the writer, cinematographer, sound designer, etc. Films also need tags for the actors because we often choose films by who is in them, not who made them. I'll be damned if I can remember who directed the last Steven Seagal masterpiece.

I agree that they need to find a way to tailer the tag info to the media you're observing. I am, however, thrilled that they've at least added the Genre function. I really hope that they're slowly making their way towards really marketing the AppleTV and are piece-by-piece adding necessary functions and features to make it perfect.

Ripping DVDs in iTunes or including Apple TV would make it perfect for me. Mac The Ripper and Handbrake are good but the process should be as easy as ripping Audio CDs.

I think that if there was one feature that would allow AppleTV to take off it would be the ability to copy DVDs you own into iTunes. Assuming a deal could be worked out with the studios, having an option to copy a DVD in a format of your choosing (AppleTV high-quality/regular quality, iPhone, iPod, etc) would allow even the a casual computer user to be able to import their collection.

I decided not to. My kids are young and would never watch any of the 'non kid' movies, and vice-versa, so it is still easier to browse for both parties by keeping them separate (especially since, on average, I will not use the genre section and don't want to scroll the the kids movies).

Why don't you just name them "Star Wars Episode 1..., Star Wars Episode 2..., etc..."

Yeah, even naming them with their full official titles (according to IMDB) keeps them in order. (e.g. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back). That is, of course, if you want them in order by episode, not theatrical release.
 
I don't have atv yet but doesn't it use the sorting tags just like iTunes?

I have my Star Wars films in order by calling them starwars 1-6 in the sorting tabs (sort name section). This would keep them in order regardless of what I called the actual movie files. It's less of an issue for Starwars as the films are called episode I-VI anyway but you have to do this for LOTR for instance, in order to have them show in the correct order.
