How do I get rid of this thing that has infectied my iMac and starts it up when I start the iMac?

People on this forum still tend to recommend malwarebytes. There's a free version that should work just as well.
https://www.malwarebytes.com

You could try this manual method, though. Open Safari's preferences

Under Extensions, disable all that you don't explicitly trust.

Under Search, switch the search engine to Google, or DuckDuckGo, or at least something that ins't searchvfr...

Under General, set homepage to blank.

I don't know the chrome or firefox specific settings.

But it is possible that this is a persistent threat, and thousands of madlib style antivirus "help" pages don't clarify the situation
