Can anyone recommend me anything or just simply pick one of these three I've already considered?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition 4G+

or

HTC One (M7) 2013

or

Nexus 5

I'm trying to stay under 500€ limit.

I have had the S4 and still have a Nexus 5, IMHO it is no contest, the Nexus 5 for me had by far and away the best experience of the two, in my opinion it is a far better phone. :)

For €500 you should be able to get the

Galaxy S5,
HTC One M8
Z2 ......

Why last years models? Loads of people get their bill pay upgrades and then sell them off. Each of those phones here can be picked up for €450/500 here privately still shrink wrapped. You still have full 24 months warranty with them from the manufacturer, and generally here the carrier has no issues helping you even if you weren't the original purchaser.

I seriously would not even consider remotely close to €500 on any of last years handsets.

If you don't want to buy privately check out the amazon European sites .it / .de / .fr and see if you can get decent deal on a 2014 model.

Yeah, except all this year models cost almost 700€. So 500€ quite significantly less.

This is exactly why I'm looking for last year models. They have still solid internals to run basically anything you throw on them. (S4 BE 4G+ and Nexus 5 both have Snapdragon 800, which is pretty snappy.) And savings are significant.

S4 4G+ costs 449€ compared to S5 which is 649€. I save 200€ and I get literally almost identical phone.

M7 costs 469€ compared to M8 which is 699€.

And well... Nexus 5 is 349€.

Go to Amazon.de

S5 = €535
M8 = €545
LG-G3 = €550

+ cheap or free shipping to any other part of europe.

Also check prices on Amazon.fr & Amazon.it

for example you can get the black S5 for €525 + 8.25 shipping on Amazon.it

Well... I checked the Amazon.de and I could get the S5 for 535€ + shipping + 60€ for 2 years warranty. This means I still pay pretty much 600€ for it. I would save 50€ compared to prizes in my country. Great.

I still rather pay 449€ for S4 BE 4G+ than 600€ for S5.

You don't need to add the 'extra' warranty. You get 2 years warranty as standard. You are just adding additional warranty with the seller / not manufacturer. Manufacturer warranty is 2 years standard anywhere in the EU and transferable.

Why are you intent on making this difficult for yourself ?

Fine, go buy last years model .... You can only help people who want to help themselves.

Well... think again. It's you who is making this difficult. I asked help on picking smartphone which is UNDER 500€. Preferably as close to 400€ as possible.

And I'm not going to order it from amazon. I'm going to walk into nearest local store and pick it up.

Also... can you really tell me anything real that the S5 does significantly better than the S4 BE 4G+ to justify the 100-200€ difference depending on where/how you buy it. And no... I don't care about the water/dust resistance.

Honestly, I don't care a bit if my phone is from 2013 or 2014 as far as it's snappy, fast & does everything I ask for it to do. I don't care if my phone isn't the fastest and shiniest in the market. I asked for great phone for under 500€. Thats it.

Okay, you were right. :D Just ordered HTC One M8 :D

Thought I didn't order it from Amazon. I ordered it from local dealer and paid the full prize for it.

Still, couldn't be happier that I end up to 2014 model.
