Hi! I'm a french Mac user, so please please please: don't look at my poor english. I'm writing to you because I'm searching for a feedback that I can't find in any french forum. This is my question: I'm a student and I've been using a mac mini for years now. I use to edit some short videos on it, make some light posters with Pixelmator and, most of the time, write and take notes for a thesis. I use Scrivener, Endnote, DevonThink Pro and Texpad and sometimes Word... and I'd like to buy a new mac. Do you think that in my case a macbook (core M5) would be a good choice? Do you use to work with it as your primary computer? And do you think that Macbook 12" is adapted to my usage? Thanks a lot.

m3 will be fine, unless you really need the 512GB storage in the m5.

better get the m5. money can be earned later, but the m5 cannot be earned later easily without the loss value of the old laptop that is being sold as second hand item.

M5 will be the better option. It runs cooler and gets the job done slightly quicker.

Your uses are nearly the same as mine. I also use it for work also - citrix. I do some light photo and video editing on it also. Works a dream with no major problems. I have the m3 2015 model so the m5 will be just great. The only thing I do not like is the poor quality of the webcam. I am a wireless person and have a dongle if required so the MacBook suits my needs.

@JD2015 Finally, I decided to buy a macbook pro without touch bar. I would have bought a macbook 12 if I had only a pure "desk" usage (writing texts), but it's not the case.

is it feel slimmer than the macbook air? the tapered down air what makes the notebook feels slimmer i think.

Good choice!

With the prices changing the new i5 MBP seems to be the best option for power vs portability.

£1549 for a the M5 MB is no longer value for money.

Something to bear in mind if portability is an absolute key feature: The M7 MB benchmarks very similar/slightly lower than the i5 MBP but now costs significantly more. No real value for money here either.

Both processors turbo to 3.1Ghz although I suspect the MBP will throttle later than the MB.

EDIT: I've just specced the M7 MB on Apple website and if costs £1670 and comes with a stock 512 SSD whilst the MBP comes to £1629 when the SSD is upgraded to 512. So not as big a difference as I thought there would be.

(btw. I managed to pick up my M7 MB in May 2016 for £1200. Thought it was a lot of money then but now kinda feel like I got a bargain!)
