I have a 3GS, but live outside of the 3G coverage area. Originally, the signal was rock solid. When I was in-town (with 3G towers), the phone switched to 3G had was happy. When I was at home, it would switch to Edge and be happy. Now, if I leave the 3G setting on at home, the phone slips into "Searching ..." and will not make or take calls. This is really starting to tick me off. Originally, I had hoped that that meant that AT&T was updating the tower near my house, but now I think it just means that AT&T has a messed up network.

First thing I would do is to shut down the iPhone (hold the power/sleep switch and then slide to power off. Then start it up. That helped me when I could get no signal, even though everyone around me had no trouble getting cell service.
