We're just about to exchange our 12" ipad for another new one. Issues with not charging (the connector seems more fragile/loose than the 11), touch becoming unresponsive, and backlight blooming at night. It also randomly locks when reading, surfing or watching videos.

Are the current 12's just lemons or did we manage to win the 'rotten apple' lottery?

My 2021 12.9 has been problem-free - it's an excellent device. Is the blooming you mention different from what has already been described for this iPad?

Aside from the gray haze / “blooming” around UI elements when in a dark room I’ve not experienced one of the issues you describe with mine.

I have had every 12.9” model and (2) of the recent 2021 models with no issues except blooming in dark lightning conditions.

I think we may have solved some of the issues with a wipe from scratch, but man that blooming is horrible. Put a reader app in dark mode and it looks like the screen is all blotchy. Apple could fix that with a software change (i.e. don't turn off the pixels), so hopefully it'll happen.

I'll *never* buy another MiniLED ipad, that's for sure.

Apple doesn't have per-pixel lighting control. It's brightness zones just like an LED TV, except they're just a lot smaller, hence "Mini"

Not to "rub it in" but I am so happy with my 2018 12.9" and I won't be upgrading til an OLED model. My roommate bought the 2021 12.9" and I was immediately shocked by the screen backlight bleed, although I was at an off-angle. From head on it isn't THAT bad to me, because apple's UI is mostly engineered around not using true blacks.

But watching OLED test footage on YouTube at an off-angle is very unpleasant. Not a common use-case, though.

Upstate NY . Was FL.
Using one today. The colors and display look better than any iPhone 12 or 13 pro max that I’ve owned. My criteria being overal uniform display and greys and blacks being true. Not half pink or yellow.
