I've just noticed that in the Dev Center a new build is available, however, there's no update in the App Store and the redemption code is for the old build. How would I go about updating from 16A319 to 16A320 which was released today?

IIRC 10.10 had 3 GM Candidate releases. Maybe we'll see this one OTA at some point. The final release is likely to be either 16A320 or another later build.

So if we install the GM seed by downloading it - will it upgrade? or do a fresh install?

Downloading the GM seed will update in place unless you create media with it to do a clean install. I'm toying with downloading again to see if it's the newer build yet.

That's what I thought - which I'm happy for - as I'm halfway through blindingly starting the update on my main laptop! I'll update with the version/build from "About this Mac" when it's done.

It will update, not upgrade.

A clean install, if you require that, involves erasure of all data (including your home directory) from the target disk. Then if you migrate data it's no longer clean, and so on.

I think I clumsily equate update and upgrade. I just wanted to make sure it preserves my old environment. In that sense, is there a difference between the two?

Regardless, I'm on Sierra:

The original developer gm released yesterday (build 16A319) was created on sept. 2 on a computer with build 16A318.

The new gm (build 16A320) was created on sept. 7 on a computer with build 16A319.

I tried to download 320 and my redemption code was already used for 319. So I can't get 320. Anyone else notice this?

Try redownloading from the purchases tab. But move the old one off your computer first if you still have it there. Either delete it or back it up somewhere.

OK - I do take the blame for that confusion. I was asking if there was a difference between the words "update" and "upgrade" :)

I don't think it is necessary for developers to go from 16A319 to 16A320.

If it was necessary apple would have released a delta update. They didn't.

So 16A320 doesn't really qualify for the name GM2 despite it being a different build.

It is just that public beta testers can only get 16A320, not 16A319 (at least legally).

So apple released 16A320 to developers so that they have the same build as public beta testers now.

If there is going to be a GM2 it should come as a delta update - and should update both 16A319 AND 16A320 to the higher build.

Even if there is no GM2, build 16A319 should update to the first beta of 10.12.1 as well as 16A320.

So it is purely academic that 16A319 and 16A320 have different build numbers - and in the grand scheme of things it is not going to matter which one you have when it comes to updating to the first 10.12.1 beta.

I downloaded both of them and made bootable usbs of both. But I'm happy with 16A319. I won't bother installing 16A320.

Next time I update is either if we get a real GM2 - or otherwise to the first 10.12.1 beta.

I just did a fresh install from the 319 build yesterday then noticed 320 today so with this being a completely fresh install I am just going to download 320 off the MAS and upgrade. Doing First Aid before and after any upgrades. Or after any clean installs for that matter.
20 minute download.

Can't wait until I get my new router at work so I can actually have the 1Gbps download I'm paying for.

Snip . . . snip . . . snip

Agree completely. It is probably just a build number difference between private release and public release, with no, or very little, difference in the actual code. Personally, I am going to remain as I am now with the GM until a 10.12.1 release.
