First off, long time reader here (first time poster), so thanks guys for your years of helpful data.
Anyway, backstory is I got my girlfriend an iPhone 5 last year as a birthday gift second hand off eBay. I did my homework and got a pretty good deal.
That was all well and good and, like I said, it's been about a year of no issues. Recently though she's had problems with her phone constantly sucking up space even though she's deleted everything on it. I did some quick searching and decided to back up the phone and do a full erase/reset.
So yeah, no big deal. Did the backup. Did the reset.
But here's where it gets weird. Now, mind you, I did a full wipe when I first got it. So this would be the second one while she's owned it. Anyway, I get to the "Hello" screen after the wipe, log in to wifi, and log into iCloud.
Then it prompts me to enter my iTunes login info to "enable purchases" or something. Standard stuff, right? Well the pre filled email address isn't mine. It isn't hers either. In fact, I've never even seen this email address in my life. Definitely never before on this phone.
So, I do what anybody with a suspicious brain would do and snapped a screenshot. Of course, the backup restore wiped it ... which sucked. But five seconds later (while it was reinstalling apps) there it was again. This time I grabbed another screenshot (attached).
I went through all my settings. The mystery email (as I'd expect) is nowhere in there. There's only my girlfriend's iTunes login and my own anywhere in the settings.
So, first and foremost, who is this email? All I can figure is it's left over from the first owner. Second, what is this even trying to get me to log into? As far as I can tell, I have all her stuff set up and logged in. I can't figure out where this info is even needed.
So I went further down the rabbit hole to Facebook and plugged in the email. Sure enough, here's some guy in Tennessee who works at a Bass Pro Shop. Previous owner? Dunno. Very well could be.
Anyway, if nothing else, I find this VERY troubling. Having sold three iPhones on eBay myself, I am very concerned now that there may be some weird software glitch that causes MY email address to pop up on some rando's phone. To my understanding, the full reset should reset ALL data. That should mean the phone would essentially be totally devoid of my personal information.
But I can prove that this is false. At least this iPhone 5 has survived two (possibly three) full resets only to spit out the previous owner's email address right in my face.
What gives?
